During our Mindfulness Coaching demo with .studio on Tuesday, someone asked me:

“Mindfulness and coaching… aren’t they opposite?”

It made me smile, because I used to think the same thing.

When I first started coaching, it was all about goals, plans, results.
Forward, forward, forward.

And when I practiced mindfulness, it felt like the complete opposite: slowing down, softening, letting go, compassionate attention.

For a while, I kept those two worlds in separate boxes.
The “doing” box 📦
The “being” box 📦

But as my practice deepened, I realized that:

👉 I cannot reach a goal without first knowing which goals actually matter
👉 I cannot let go of what doesn’t serve me without discipline and boundaries
👉 Mindfulness without action is just zoning out
👉 Action without mindfulness is just blind restlessness

So no, they’re not opposites.

I see them as two branches of the same tree.

One reaches inward, one outward.

Both rooted in presence.

Mindfulness teaches us not to believe every thought. It helps us to look at our current landscape as data.
It gives us space to pause, to choose instead of react.

Coaching takes that awareness and puts it into intention motion, toward goals that are chosen with clarity and intention.

And I feel that this is where meaningful change happens!

We need both.

❌ I’ve got a stressful freelance job that depends entirely on me
❌ Constantly hustling for clients and opportunities
❌ A predictable long-term relationship
❌ A flat that constantly wants fixing
❌ And a body with a chronic illness

I know, not the usual tone of my posts.

But that’s definitely one way to tell my story!

It's called the "Maria is struggling" story. And frankly, it's a little exhausting, don't you think?

Now, here’s another version:

✨ I’ve built a job that builds around what I love
✨ I’ve got freedom to experiment, play, and adapt
✨ I’m in a relationship that’s steady and safe
✨ I get to care for a home
✨ And I’ve got a body that lets me move, connect, love, and live

See what I did here?

Same exact life.
Very different narrative.

The way we label what we're going through determines the quality of our experience. Often way more than the nature of the experience itself.

We all have it.

That invisible backpack stuffed with “Am I okay?” questions.

Mine usually sounds like an over-caffeinated flatmate who spent the night playing videogames and now refuses to shut up:

Did I say the right thing?
Am I wearing the right pants?
Do they secretly hate me?
Have I done enough today?
Should I be drinking more water?
Wait… is this mole new?? Am I dying?? Should I Google it? No, *do not Google it*. 👀

And what do we do with this voice?

We chase the next “okay” fix:

The next holiday, the compliment, the next certification, we buy another object.

To me, it’s like playing a never-ending game of musical chairs except every time I’m about to sit down, life moves the chair three steps to the left and then someone else sits on my head.

And the music starts again.

So, here’s the number one takeaway I carry dearly from my 15+ years of mindfulness practice. 🪷

If only my body were different..
If only that person treated me differently..

We wait for life to match our wishes, and miss the life that’s here.

THIS is what’s true right now.
We can meet it with kindness.
We can notice what’s needed, and take one small step in that direction.

Whether I’m teaching leadership, mindfulness, or yoga, we begin here:
Pausing, paying attention, meeting the moment as it is.

WTF? = What The Function?, obviously.

I learned this gem of an acronym from psychologist Susan David, and I LOVE it.

Emotions aren’t just random noise getting in the way of what we want to achieve. They have a FUNCTION.

Similarly, stress isn’t just there to ruin your vibe.
Sometimes it’s fuel.
Sometimes it’s yelling, “PAY ATTENTION!”

So ask yourself:

What is your stress trying to tell you?

What are you unwilling to see?

What can you learn from it?

Mindfulness is the simple act of slowing down and intentionally starting noticing.
