⚠️ Complications of Starvation
1. Refeeding Syndrome
• A potentially fatal condition when feeding is restarted too quickly.
• Sudden insulin release → rapid uptake of phosphate, potassium, and magnesium into cells → severe electrolyte imbalance.
• Can cause arrhythmias, seizures, and death.
2. Infections
• Due to immune suppression and poor barrier function of the skin and gut.
3. Multiorgan Failure
• In severe or prolonged starvation, organs may fail, including liver and kidneys.

🟢 Does Starvation Improve After Feeding?
Yes—but with Caution
• Nutritional rehabilitation can reverse many effects, but it must be done carefully:
• Gradual refeeding to avoid refeeding syndrome
• Start with low calories and increase slowly
• Supplement electrolytes (especially phosphate, potassium, magnesium)
• Multivitamin support (especially thiamine)
Recovery Timeline
• Short-term: Energy, alertness, and GI function often improve within days to weeks.
• Medium-term: Muscle mass and immune function begin recovering over weeks.
• Long-term: Full recovery, including menstrual cycles and organ function, may take months.
