Last week in class at The Caversham Group Practice, I used props to make backbends accessible to every student and their range of mobility, strength and balance.

Backbends are a wonderful part of a yoga class to improve mobility in the spine and help relieve stiffness and pain in the back and neck.

Option A: Ardha urdhva dhanurasana (wheel) with a yoga wheel

Option B: Setubandhāsana (bridge) with blocks

Option C: Setubandhāsana (bridge) unsupported

Option D: Ardha urdhva dhanurasana (wheel) unsupported

Demonstrated by my beautiful Mum, Sally.

Dharana

Dharana is the yogic principal meaning single unwavering point of focus. Imagine the flow of water compared to the flow of oil. Water is bubbling, inconsistent, loud. Oil is smooth, cohesive, soft. Through dharana, the mind flows like oil - thoughts are gentle and we don’t chase the story of each one.

We can practise dharana on the mat through balancing postures, when we simply must have total focus or we will fall.

Postures we used in class this week:

Ardha adho mukha vrksasana (handstand) or a 90 degree wall-based variation

Natarajasana (dancer)

Excited to run another staff vinyasa yoga course this autumn. Over the four weeks, students will deepen their knowledge of yogic postures, philosophy and meditation. We’ll start class 1 with a discussion of safe alignment through body awareness, then workshop foundational postures to set the groundwork for the course.

Tomorrow I begin the intensive Jivamukti Yoga Spiritual Warrior teacher training with with .oskorbina and _seainside.

“The Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior ™ 1-hour sequence is a well rounded comprehensive yoga class that transforms, invigorates and energizes, while at the same time grounding and leading the student inward on an exploration of the deeper spiritual aspects of the self.“

The course “incorporates the physical, psychological, spiritual and mystical aspects of yoga into modern life, without losing sight of the universal goal of the practice: liberation.”

Adho Mukha Vrksasana - handstand.

The posture strengthens and mobilises the upper body, improves our balance and energises us by increasing blood flow to the brain.

You can build strength and confidence before trying the full posture by using a wall.

1. Start in a short downward facing dog with your heels against the wall.

2. Slowly walk your feet up the wall until they are parallel to the floor.

3. If you are slipping, try yoga socks or chalk on your soles.

4. You can practice lifting one foot toward the ceiling, then the other.

5. Start with two breaths. Add a breath each day you practise.

6. Walk back down the wall.

Year 3 pupils practised yoga in the garden to build balance, concentration and appreciation of nature as part of the Telling Tales In The Gardens: Kentish Town Library Literacy and Nature Project, a wonderful initiative run by Ami Sekhon.

Yoga, meditation and breathwork can help young people to stay in the moment, calm anxiety and build confidence. Write to me if you'd like to discuss offering classes to children in your community.

Ustrasana (camel posture).

In classes last week, my focus was heart openers and back bends.

By inverting the usual body position of rounded spine, curved neck, hunched shoulders, short pectoral (chest) muscles, we relieve tension in the muscles and create more space in the chest and abdomen for our breathing apparatus.
