World Breastfeeding Week 2025

BREASTFEEDING AS COST SAVING.

These statistics speak for themselves. It’s very short sighted to think these will be achievable without some investment and the prioritising of skilled, effective breastfeeding support from qualified professionals being standard for all families.

It’s not enough to simply state these facts...change needs to happen in order to support families and our health care system to achieve these statistics.

Practitioners need training and education around breastfeeding, and information about how to refer on if necessary so families get the correct support and information.

We need to recognise the value of the IBCLC to offer this support and expertise within the health system.

The responsibility of recognising the value of breastfeeding and breastmilk doesn’t rest with parents alone.

Memory foam or pocket sprung?

We often get asked if a memory foam mattress is better than a pocket sprung / foam combination.

It really depends on personal preference. At our clinic we recommend trying before buying.

A memory foam can be very comfortable, however they can also be too comfortable. Some clients report that they turn less in bed (pressure is taken off our pressure sensors which makes us turn regularly to avoid pressure sores) resulting in us turning less though the night and potentially waking up more stiff due to less movement.
Others, love a memory foam mattress. We love a pocket sprung with a memeory foam topper.

For those couples who cannot agree, some companies offer a bespoke custom made option for both sides of the bed.
This way eveyone gets some peaceful sleep!

Prostate cancer is very common. At a recent conference we were told that going to the toilet every 3 hours during the day will reduce the risk. Often men become engrossed in work and forget to drink fluids or go to the loo.

Our clients are often surprised by the in-depth medical history taken during our first consultation. This is however essential to make sure people are presenting with biomechanical back pain and nothing more sinister causing the pain.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in older men worldwide, with 3.4 million cases in the US in 2021.

This JAMA Patient Page describes prostate cancer symptoms, screening, diagnosis, and treatment.

Schools out for Summer!

Have your children just broken up for the summer holidays? Here's why you need to give them at least the rest of this week to decompress.

The end of term is tiring for everyone; parents, teachers and children. As much as we may have lovely plans for different activities over the coming weeks, what our children really need as they adjust to a new rhythmn for the next month, is time and space and patience.

Adjusting to the school holidays often sees a release of pent-up feelings and difficult behaviour. Whining, Grouchiness. Reluctance to do anything. Expect big behaviours, outbursts, or simple refusal to get dressed or leave the house.

We may have arranged a lovely day out, or booked them into an exciting holiday club (that sometimes they just have to go to for childcare reasons) but often what they want is just to be at home, not doing much and letting go of everything they've been bottling up for the last few weeks.

What can you do to help? Be patient, be understanding. Don't take difficult behaviour personally and hold off the plans until next week.

What if you can't do that and they have to go to holiday club? Everything I've just mention and even more so with the understanding, containing, taking deep breaths, being there for lots of hugs in the evenings and not taking behaviour personally - and then, quiet weekends for the first couple of weeks.

Have your children already broken up? How's it going if so?

Are you a Bob or the Girl? Either way both posture’s can lead to various neck and upper back complaints and even headaches. Have you had your posture checked lately?

Neck comparison.
Bob (slouching) on left, The Girl (not slouching) on the right.

Bob is that guy you’d want to sit and watch TV and have a beer with. The Girl looks like she might currently be studying two difficult and potentially obscure languages, when she’s not running a side business helping other cats with math.

The first year of life is a time of explosive neurological growth—the brain increases by over 100%, and the cerebellum grows 240%, playing a vital role in coordination, balance, and sensory processing.

Early cranial evaluation is essential to ensure this development occurs without interference.

Here are three key components of a pediatric cranial assessment:
1️⃣ Visual Analysis – Evaluate skull shape and symmetry for signs of stress or distortion
2️⃣ Palpation – Gently assess sutures and fontanelles (externally and intra-orally) for motion and restriction
3️⃣ Cranial Bone Motion – Observe dynamic cranial movements in response to respiration and dural tension

These protocols help detect and correct early imbalances—setting the stage for healthy brain development and improved neurological function.

The man in this photo was taken in 1946. This guy is Ken Shimizu. He is 35 years old. He has 2 children.
Shimizu never runs. Sleeps late. Eat whatever he wants. Even drink beer instead of water. Eat dinner with many kinds of food every night...
What does Shimizu do to get such a body?
Shimizu doesn't have any secrets.
Shimizu is the person sitting in the bottom left corner of the photo... As for the man standing in the middle, I'm not sure 🤔

How do you feel about chiropractic care for a newborn?

The first time, 10+ years ago, a parent told me they were taking their newborn to a chiropractor, I almost fell out of my chair. Most pediatricians will tell you that you shouldn’t take your child to a chiropractor, but I couldn’t deny the results some of my patients were seeing. So I Took the time to get to know a few that I trust wholeheartedly to not harm a baby. And I’ve seen just too many good results to think it’s a coincidence.

One thing I promised myself when I was a younger physician was that I would never get stuck in a rut, that I would never stop learning, that I would always keep my mind open. I’ll never be perfect, but I’ll always be improving.

And, like any good health care, you shouldn’t just take them when there is an issue.

What have you take your baby to a chiropractor for?

I’ve referred for:
-sleep issues
-gerd
-fussiness
-gassiness
-after a fall or accident
- ear infections
-and more

There are lots of ways to "exercise". The main thing is to MOVE.
A 30 minute walk has physical and emotional benefits. Reducing 'sitting time' and connecting with people are very good for us too.
