The dangers of fat accumulation
Excessive fat accumulation, especially in the abdominal area and in the form of visceral fat, can lead to numerous health problems and increase the risk of various chronic diseases. Below are some common disorders associated with fat accumulation:
Cardiovascular diseases
High blood pressure (hypertension): Abdominal fat in particular increases pressure on the heart and leads to high blood pressure. Chronic hypertension raises the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Coronary heart disease: Excess visceral fat can cause atherosclerosis (narrowing and hardening of the blood vessels), leading to heart problems and other cardiovascular diseases.
Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes: Fat accumulation in the abdominal region promotes insulin resistance, meaning cells no longer respond properly to insulin. This is one of the main causes of type 2 diabetes. Obesity is a major risk factor.
High cholesterol levels
Fat accumulation, especially an increase in “bad” LDL cholesterol, raises cholesterol levels and thus increases the risk of atherosclerosis.
Fatty liver disease
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): Excess visceral fat can accumulate in the liver and lead to fatty liver disease, with possible consequences such as inflammation, cirrhosis, or liver failure.
Sleep apnea
Fat accumulation can narrow the airways and increase the risk of obstructive sleep apnea, a disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep, which can lead to daytime fatigue, memory problems, and heart issues.
Loss of collagen and skin aging
Skin sagging and wrinkles: Excess fat can negatively affect skin structure and body shape, leading to loss of elasticity, sagging, and wrinkle formation.
Joint problems
Arthritis: Obesity increases pressure on the knees, hips, and back. This can result in joint wear and arthritis.
Certain types of cancer
Breast, colon, and uterine cancer: Obesity is associated with a higher risk of certain cancers. Fat tissue influences hormonal balance and can promote tumor growth.
Gallstones
Excess cholesterol and fat in the gallbladder can cause gallstones. Being overweight is a significant risk factor.
Mental health issues
Depression and anxiety: Obesity can negatively affect self-image and lead to depression, anxiety, and other emotional problems.
Hormonal imbalances
Excess body fat, especially around the abdomen, can cause hormonal disturbances, such as increased cortisol and estrogen levels. This negatively affects metabolism, the immune system, and fertility.
