This World Head and Neck Cancer Day we are sharing Michael Whitehill's experience of being diagnosed after visiting a GP for another concern.

It is important that if you are concerned about any unusual symptoms, you see a healthcare professional without delay.

Michael Whitehill was treated by Mr Asit Arora, Consultant ENT/Head and Neck Surgeon at Cromwell Hospital after visiting a Bupa GP.

At Cromwell Hospital he had a biopsy and then had two transoral robotic surgeries and a neck dissection to remove lymph glands.

“This targeted approach represents a really excellent treatment option because it’s a minimally invasive technique which gets a curative outcome without compromising on long term swallow function. Mr Whitehill undergoes regular monitoring, and his recovery thus far has been absolutely spot on,” said Mr Arora.

Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, is a cancer that begins in the stomach lining.

Although the majority of cases don’t have any obvious cause, it may develop because of lifestyle or environmental factors, or if your stomach contains a bacteria known as Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori).

The symptoms of stomach cancer can be hard to spot, as they often occur in other, less serious conditions as well.

You should make an appointment with a healthcare professional at the earliest opportunity if you think you might have stomach cancer.

Did you know that the first operation on the heart was performed more than 100 years ago?

Thanks to medical advances, we can now offer patients a wide range of treatment options for heart conditions. This includes keyhole heart surgery.

In keyhole heart surgery, instead of reaching the heart through open-heart surgery, surgeons can access the heart through the ribs via small, strategically placed cuts (incisions).

For many patients, this results in much faster recovery times and a reduced rate of complications.

At Cromwell Hospital we are leaders in cardiology care and we are one of the only private hospitals to provide minimally invasive (keyhole) cardiothoracic surgeries.

Find out more about keyhole heart surgery and how it could help you in our latest blog: bit.ly/3IjNFFO
