As our CEO, Steve Smith, says, our updated wards have ensured we can continue to provide care high quality care which puts every patient first.

The £100m Government pledge to hospices across the UK has helped to fund part of this ward update. However, we would not have been able to make all of these much needed refurbishments if it hadn't been for the generosity of our supporters.

There is more need for Government funding across the hospice sector, and we want to ensure that all hospices across the country can keep delivering high quality care for years to come. We will continue to, and always will advocate for ourselves and the hospice sector.

Steve Smith, Chief Executive of St Christopher’s, says: “We welcome the extension to the capital funding grant for hospices which has been announced today.

“We were grateful recently to have the opportunity to show the Health and Social Care Secretary, Wes Streeting, the work we have done in modernising and upgrading our in-patient unit at St Christopher’s, partly funded by this capital funding scheme.

“While the additional £25M funding for hospices in England is appreciated, it is not enough on its own. We look forward to engaging with the government to ensure their plans for a Modern Service Framework for palliative and end of life care means a fairer funding model for hospices in the long-term.”

On Thursday 18 December, we were pleased to welcome Wes Streeting, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, for a visit to our Sydenham site.

Wes officially opened our newly refurbished Nuffield ward and had the opportunity to meet and talk with some of the people in our care, and our staff, about their experiences.

We've been able to carry out our ward refurbishments partly due to a gratefully received Government funding initiative, as well as fundraising from our supporters and local community. We had the opportunity to discuss with Wes the need for more sustainable Government funding to ensure that hospices across the country can keep delivering high quality care for years to come.
