Childhood abuse is often intertwined with shame and silence, creating a complex psychological dynamic for survivors.
Shame, a freezing emotion, can become deeply embedded in the survivor’s narrative, leading them to internalise a sense of unworthiness, believing they are inherently flawed or deserving of the mistreatment they endured.
This profound shame can cast a long shadow over one's self-perception, hindering the ability to share their experiences and seek support.
The silence that often accompanies shame becomes a protective mechanism, shielding survivors from potential judgment or retribution, but simultaneously reinforcing feelings of isolation and self-blame, making it difficult to form and maintain relationships.
The relationship between shame and silence perpetuates a culture of secrecy that further isolates survivors. Fearful of judgement or disbelief, individuals may carry the burden of their experiences in silence, reluctant to disclose the trauma they endured.
Breaking this cycle requires dismantling the shame associated with abuse, fostering environments that encourage open dialogue, empathy, and understanding. This is where our therapists come in, providing the space, time, empathy and knowledge needed to support disclosure, exploration and integration.
By acknowledging and addressing the interplay of shame and silence, we can create spaces where survivors feel empowered to share their stories, confront their pain, and embark on a path towards healing and reclaiming their voices.
At One In Four, we provide support to survivors.
