St Joseph's Hospice

St Joseph's Hospice St Joseph's Hospice helps people in East London to live life to the fullest, to the very end. 💙

We have been enhancing lives, easing pain and bringing comfort and understanding for over a hundred years. Nothing can soften the blow of learning that you have been diagnosed with an illness which cannot be cured and will bring an end to your life. But at St Joseph’s Hospice we help our patients and those closest to them, to cope with the anxiety and challenges which may arise. St Joseph’s broad range of services enriches the lives of patients and their families from the diverse communities of east and north-east London. St Joseph’s is available to all those who can benefit from it; we work to meet all the needs of our patients, including those which reflect their ethnic, cultural or religious heritage. The care and treatment available at St Joseph’s helps patients live as actively as possible for as long as possible. It also supports the whole person, offering practical, emotional and spiritual help in addition to the medical care. The Day Hospice, social work team, chaplaincy, bereavement and children’s bereavement services all work to meet the needs of those with cancer and other life limiting illnesses as well as those of their families and carers. Most people with a serious illness prefer to remain at home if they can. Our Community Palliative Care Team works alongside other professionals, so that wherever possible, people needing palliative care can be cared for in their own homes.

An Easter Sunday message from our Roman Catholic Priest, Fr Terence, Lead Chaplain:

"Easter marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ and is a time of hope and new beginnings in the Christian calendar. Following his crucifixion, Jesus was placed in the tomb for three days and rose again on Easter Sunday.

The important message for us to take away is that, just as Jesus died, it was a promise that we too will die, but like Jesus, we have the opportunity to rise again and be forever with Him."

We hope everyone celebrating this Easter Sunday has a joyful day with their loved ones. Happy Easter Sunday to all 💙

Over £14,400+ raised!⭐

Our staff came together this week to congratulate Dementia Wellbeing East London (DWEL) volunteer, Maria (centre), who set out last year to raise money for the dementia-friendly music groups she volunteers at to help ensure they continue.

Rach, DWEL Team Manager (left) said: “For people with dementia, music can be an amazing ‘connector’, which is why we set up regular music groups for our community. When our volunteer Maria came along for the first time and found out we needed to fundraise to run them, she made it her mission to help! She has been unstoppable ever since and we are so very grateful for her.”

We're overwhelmed with her brilliant fundraising efforts, and want to say a big thank you to Maria and her friends and loved ones who have donated to the fundraiser so far. Thanks to them, the groups can continue making an impact for the local people with dementia who attend each month 💙

📸 A few snaps from Spin for St Joseph’s 2026!

We’d like to say a big thank you and well done to the brilliant teams who took on our first Spinathon challenge at Britannia Leisure Centre last week, racing to see who could reach 40 miles first. It was a close battle, but Team Better came out on top in the end 🏆

The amazing efforts of the teams mean they’ve raised over £1,600 so far. A big thank you to everyone who donated, to Hoxton Radio and Better for hosting, as well as Knight Bishop Estate Agents for sponsoring the event - plus everyone who stopped to say hello and cheer on the riders 💙

Saint Joseph is the patron saint of the Catholic Church and the patron saint of our hospice. In the Christian tradition, St Joseph is known as the husband of the Virgin Mary. He played an important role in the birth and upbringing of Jesus, supporting and caring for Mary and his family.

His principal feast day is today 19th March (the Solemnity of St Joseph), honouring him as the patron saint of a happy death and the dying. He is invoked for a peaceful passing, as tradition holds he died in the arms of Jesus and Mary. A second feast, St Joseph the Worker, is celebrated on 1st May.

We are holding a Mass today at 12pm in St Joseph’s Hospice Chapel in acknowledgement of St Joseph’s Day. All are welcome to join.

With the London Marathon and Hackney Half both just around the corner, we brought together more of the incredible people running for this year here at the Hospice for a welcome evening 🩷

Our runners heard from Anna from our Fundraising team, nurses Farida and Rosemarie, and Mitch from LDN PHYSIO (who’s also running the London Marathon for us in just a few weeks time!). It was a fantastic evening, full of training and fundraising tips, as well as insights into our work and how fundraising enables us to deliver our services.

Our Hackney Half team is now full - but if you'd like to join the waiting list should a place become available, fill out the form on our website 👉 www.stjh.org.uk/hackneyhalf

Happy St Patrick’s Day! Today we celebrate the Feast of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It’s a day to honour Irish culture and faith across the world ☘️

At St Joseph’s Hospice, our roots trace back to the Sisters of Charity, who came from Ireland in 1900 to care for the poor and dying of East London. Sr. Maria Coates, from our Chaplaincy Team, shared what this day means to her:

“St Patrick’s Day is an important day to celebrate being Irish, sharing traditional food like coddle, and wearing a bit of green where you can. For me, it’s a special chance to celebrate my culture alongside my faith. No matter where we are in the world, it brings people together, whether through Irish heritage or simply a love of Irish culture. I fondly remember celebrating every year during the six years I worked out in Nigeria. Saint Patrick was a powerful figure who cared deeply for people, and his faith guided everything he did.”

She also shared a beautiful Irish blessing:
“May your troubles be less and your blessings be more, and nothing but happiness come through your door.”

Wishing everyone a joyful St Patrick’s Day 😊💚
