St Joseph's Hospice

St Joseph's Hospice St Joseph's Hospice helps people in East London to live life to the full, to the very end. 💙

We have been enhancing lives, easing pain and bringing comfort and understanding for over a hundred years. Nothing can soften the blow of learning that you have been diagnosed with an illness which cannot be cured and will bring an end to your life. But at St Joseph’s Hospice we help our patients and those closest to them, to cope with the anxiety and challenges which may arise. St Joseph’s broad range of services enriches the lives of patients and their families from the diverse communities of east and north-east London. St Joseph’s is available to all those who can benefit from it; we work to meet all the needs of our patients, including those which reflect their ethnic, cultural or religious heritage. The care and treatment available at St Joseph’s helps patients live as actively as possible for as long as possible. It also supports the whole person, offering practical, emotional and spiritual help in addition to the medical care. The Day Hospice, social work team, chaplaincy, bereavement and children’s bereavement services all work to meet the needs of those with cancer and other life limiting illnesses as well as those of their families and carers. Most people with a serious illness prefer to remain at home if they can. Our Community Palliative Care Team works alongside other professionals, so that wherever possible, people needing palliative care can be cared for in their own homes.

Today is Nursing Support Workers Day 😊

Every year on 23 November, this day is dedicated to recognising the vital contribution that Nursing Support Workers make to patients across health and social care.

At St Joseph’s Hospice, we rely on our incredible Healthcare Assistants every single day to support our patients and we couldn’t deliver our exceptional care without them.

Thank you to each and every one of you for your dedication, compassion and hard work 💙

It’s Children’s Grief Awareness Week, and this year’s theme is 'Sharing Stories, Strengthening Hope' 📖🤝

If you’ve visited the Hospice this week, you may have seen our colourful display highlighting the work of our Patient and Family Counselling Service ✨

At St Joseph’s Hospice, we offer specialist support for children, young people and families who have experienced the loss of a family member, caregiver or other significant person. This support is available free of charge. Our team also provides consultations to help families with younger children who may be struggling with grief.

A huge thank you to the fantastic Jesuit Refugee Service UK for creating a wonderful collection of Twiddle Cuffs for our Dementia Wellbeing East London community members 🌈

A Twiddle Cuff is a knitted cuff with a variety of textures and attached items that a person living with dementia can safely fiddle with. Many people with dementia experience restlessness in their hands, and these cuffs provide comforting sensory stimulation while also keeping hands warm and occupied 👋

Thank you again for your generosity and for taking the time to visit the hospice and connect with our team. We are very grateful, and we know our community members will absolutely love their brand new cuffs! 😊💙

If you’ve visited our Hospice gardens this week, you may have noticed something special...✨

We are delighted to share our stunning new mosaic, kindly donated by the Hackney Mosaic Project

Created by mosaicist and designer Tessa Hunkin, The Hackney Mosaic Project supports people seeking support with wellbeing, bringing together volunteers from local recovery services and the wider community to create beautiful public artworks across East London 🤝

We are absolutely overjoyed and deeply grateful. Our gardens are a peaceful and reflective space for patients and their loved ones, and this new beautiful new mosaic fits in perfectly 🌈💙

Thank you so much to Tessa and everyone at the Hackney Mosaic Project!

In October, we proudly celebrated UK Black History Month at St Joseph’s 🖤

Hear from Lucia, our Compassionate Neighbours Coordinator, as she reflects on the wonderful workshops and inspiring speaker events that took place throughout the month. We also had a fantastic and informative display all about this year’s theme ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’, which you will have seen if you’ve visited the Hospice recently! 👀

A huge thank you to our fantastic speakers, Lucia, and to all our staff and volunteers who helped make this month so meaningful and memorable 👏
