Society of Psychotherapy An online meeting place for friends of psychotherapy

11/10/2024

Society of Psychotherapy invite you to meet Alison Wren 15.10.24 @ 19.00. £6.00. CPD available.

“Sharing learning from neurodivergent affirming art psychotherapy.” Alison is an art psychotherapist working in private practice. In this brief presentation she invites you to share in some of the approaches they have found to increase curiosity from both clients and therapists to affirm neurodivergence, aid in trauma recovery and acknowledge the impact of internalised oppressions. Alison Wren (she/they) is an integrative art psychotherapist based in Edinburgh, Scotland, who has been specialising in supporting and collaborating with GSRD (gender, s*x, relationship diverse) clients for the last 15+ years. They have spent most of their career in the third sector and now predominantly work in private practice as a therapist, supervisor and educator. She is particularly interested in finding creative ways to support clients in being neurodiversity affirming, whilst striving to embody the values of trauma informed and anti-oppressive practice.

We are delighted to announce that our next lecture will be from Prof Digby Tantam on the 17th September at 7:00pm. Prof Tantam's talk is entitled "Does Psychiatric Diagnosis Harm People?". Go to our Meetup page for more details and tickets. https://www.meetup.com/society-of-psychotherapy/events/303273537/?eventOrigin=home_next_event_you_are_hosting

Diagnosis in medicine is considered an essential step in the discovery of a disease and potentially the cure. But many critics have argued that 'labelling', as the diagnosis is sometimes called, may do more harm than good. Yet can we do without. New labels such as neurodiverse, non-binary, or PTSD have been welcomed by many psychotherapists. Are labels/ diagnoses to be welcomed after all? This is a decision for every therapist and every client, but I will present some information that may be helpful in this decision based on my forthcoming book, Challenging Psychiatry's Reliance on the Disease Model.

Directional Presence in the Therapeutic Encounter: With Mike Moss.

“In my work as a therapist I have begun to discover something more in the presence of being in the therapeutic encounter which if attended to even in the smallest of ways, movement towards healing can be experienced. It is as if there is some kind of guidance towards the direction for potential growth which can be experienced as a presence of there being something more.

I may be called a counsellor and the other person a client, yet I believe that ultimately in this relationship, we are not separate in our fullest universal expression of being, and that there is what I have termed a ' directional presence ' towards us both functioning more fully in each moment of encounter.

And it is by receiving this directional presence, that there is a deeper therapeutic contact between helper and receiver of help which joins us momentarily in the mystery of life.”

Moss. M (2017). ‘On Becoming More in the Therapeutic Relationship: An exploration of Directional Presence’. COSCA Counselling in Scotland Journal, Spring 2017 (pp14-16).

Mike Moss was trained as a Youth & Community worker and has worked in voluntary and statutory roles with children and young people and their families for 40 years. He is now a registered psychotherapist and clinical supervisor and has had many articles published on the power and mystery of the therapeutic relationship. He has also presented his work at various workshops, national and international conferences. Mike lives in Edinburgh and has a small private practice offering counselling, supervision and training and works part time as a school counsellor. He can be contacted at mike.moss@outlook.com.

A “Society of Psychotherapy” welcome to 2024 and to kick-off the year:

“Phenomenology as Worldview, Attitude and Method.”

“The application of existential phenomenology is perhaps the main challenge for existential therapists. Simultaneously, it is the aspect of our work from which colleagues in other therapeutic models often express the greatest interest in learning. We will review some characteristics of this perspective, delving deeper into it beyond the method, to consider the attitude and worldview to which it invites us.”

Dr. YAQUI ANDRÉS MARTÍNEZ-ROBLES is an existential-phenomenological therapist. He is the founder of the CIREX: Circle of Studies in Existential Therapy (Círculo de Estudios en Terapia Existencial) in Mexico and Colombia. Yaqui is a clinical psychologist with an MA & PhD in psychotherapy. He teaches Existential-phenomenological perspective internationally.
