If you become unwell and don't need emergency care there other NHS services available for you.

Our hospitals are extremely busy - and must prioritise our sickest patients first - so using one of the alternative services will mean you can be treated more quickly.

Dr Rob Tan, who is the Clinical Director for Emergency Medicine at Epsom and St Helier Hospitals, shares in this video other ways to seek help when it is not an emergency .

Thank you so much Dave ❤️

St George’s is proud to be one of nine NHS sites in the country using AI technology which means doctors can see more patients.

Doctors wear a special microphone which records conversations they have with patients and uses AI - called Ambient Voice Technologies - to accurately generate real-time transcriptions and write clinical notes.

It has now been proven the AI technology gives doctors up to 25% more time to spend with patients - while ensuring clinical safety and data protection.

In this video shot by The Department of Health and Social Care Dr Ahmed Mahdi, Emergency Department consultant at St George’s, explains how AI helps him see more patients.

When Stuart Glover’s son Jensen was born at Epsom Hospital, the care he received in the Special Care Baby Unit saved his life. Since then, the support from Epsom’s paediatric teams has continued to mean everything to their family.

Now, just nine months after leg surgery, Stuart is taking on the Surrey Half Marathon to say thank you and raise vital funds for the teams who were there when his family needed them most.

✅New year
✅New challenge
✅Real impact

If Stuart’s story inspires you, why not make this the year you take on a fundraising event for your local hospital?

📢 Our hospitals are under extreme pressure right now and are very busy.

We must prioritise our sickest patients so if you do not need emergency treatment you will be seen quicker if you try other NHS services.

If you turn up at one of Emergency Departments when it's less urgent you may end up waiting even longer or be redirected.

Thank you to all the parents at St George’s who have donated their baby’s umbilical cord blood for stem cell transplants.

St George’s is proud to be one of the three hospitals in the UK where cord blood is donated and usually used to treat blood cancers such as leukaemia or genetic conditions.

All donations are stored at the NHS Blood and Transplant cord blood bank in Filton, Bristol, which opened in 1996 and is the fourth largest cord blood bank in the world.

The cord blood is stored -196C until a match is found anywhere in the world and in some cases the baby may be an adult by then.

The NHS has now issued a milestone 1,000 donations for stem cell transplants with the 1,000th unit being originally donated in 2016.

Alex Ross, Head of NHS Blood and Transplant’s Cord Blood Bank, said: “We thank every generous mother who has donated over the years. We’re incredibly grateful to St George’s hospital for helping our collections teams work with mums giving birth.”

The new year has brought a new wave of pressures as hospitals face the triple threat of:

▪️ Cold weather
▪️ Winter viruses
▪️ High numbers of patients needing specialist care.

Getting vaccinated, washing hands, and staying home when displaying symptoms can all prevent the spread of flu and other winter illnesses.

If you or a loved on become unwell and it is not an emergency use NHS 111 online, a 24/7 service for urgent medical problems – to keep emergency departments for the sickest and most seriously injured patients.

Alternatively your local pharmacy can advise on a range of minor illnesses and can advise if a doctor is needed.

💬 “Don’t make the mistake of thinking flu is just a bad cold – figures show the infection can make people seriously ill, and I’d urge people to take steps to ensure they and their loved ones don’t suffer.”

As of Sunday, 45 beds at St George’s, Epsom and St Helier hospitals were occupied by patients with flu and some beds have also had to be closed due to the infection and other illnesses like norovirus.

This comes as NHS England issued a warning that Christmas and New Year gatherings may have caused a bounce back in winter viruses – and that the worst is “far from over”.

Getting vaccinated, washing hands, and staying home when displaying symptoms can all prevent the spread of flu and other winter illnesses.

Elaine Clancy, Group Chief Nurse for St George’s, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group, who features in this video, said: “It’s been a bleak start to the new year as, like other hospitals up and down the country, we’re seeing some very sick patients come to our hospitals – and the cold weather and winter illnesses are having a real impact.

“Don’t make the mistake of thinking flu is just a bad cold – these figures show the infection can make people seriously ill, and I’d urge people to take steps to ensure they and their loved ones don’t suffer.”

If you’re eligible for a free NHS flu vaccine you can book an appointment at your local pharmacy that offers this service.

Your local pharmacy may also offer the flu vaccine to children aged two and three – no appointment is needed and it is given as a nasal spray.
