For Mother’s Day 2021, while I was quietly navigating the challenging journey of trying to conceive, a friend asked me to pen a post about self-compassion for her motherhood-dedicated Instagram. Little did I know that, three years later, on this Mother’s Day 2024, I’d celebrate my very first one as a mum.

As I revisit that heartfelt 2021 post, gratitude overwhelms me. Here’s to all incredible mums—those on this path, those awaiting their turn and to our precious little ones.

“I grew up dreaming of 4 kids, 2 labradors, and a big house with a garden blocks away from mum & dad’s. But life had different plans.

God granted me the strength to sketch a different dream. While this new dream brings happiness, from time to time nostalgia lingers for the one that never was.

Seeing your Mother’s Day photos surrounded by your kids captioned with beautiful reflections on the challenges and joys of motherhood hits really hard.

Yet, between the lines, hints show I’m not alone, many of you feel a bit nostalgic too... there are brief moments when you miss your life before motherhood.

That’s all it takes for me to stop feeling like an outsider to the mum club. What brings you and me together is that being human, we’re all prone to frustration (when things aren’t exactly how we planned) and embarrassment (when our privileged lives don’t feel enough). Acknowledging these feelings is daunting, but it’s a big step to self-compassion.

Mother’s Day posts from women that have what I want but still long for what I have, makes me realice that loving what you have and still facing difficulties isn’t about being ungrateful – it’s just part of being human. As I get this I embrace the imperfections of their humanity and while doing so I realize that I’m really embracing myself.

At nearly 35, I’m still dreaming – of having space to host my family at Christmas and a little dachshund to stroll with in Regent’s Park. I’ve got an amazing husband, good health and a career that’s on the up and up. I dream of publishing my book and growing old with Vincenzo by the Mediterranean sea.

And yet, I’m still dreaming of the day I’ll celebrate Mother’s Day being a mum.”

What do you see here? Beyond the layers of this exquisite cake lies a tapestry of emotions, care and gratitude. My dear mother-in-law, who journeyed from Sicily to London, baked this with love to pamper me during the final weeks of my pregnancy.

As a registered dietitian, I am committed to the achievement of goals in terms of nutrition, body composition and weight, but as a positive psychologist, I also understand that food’s power extends far beyond its nutritional value. It’s a conduit for love, celebration, comfort and joy.

On this particular day, our home was filled with more than just the aroma of baking. It held the essence of family bonds, friendships and unwavering support. My mother-in-law graciously allowed me to add my personal touch, reflecting the importance of collaboration and shared moments.

As I intricately decorated the cake, it became a heartfelt expression of gratitude to our friends—a couple whose unwavering support has been a constant throughout this transformative journey to parenthood, and their charming 2-year-old daughter who brings joy with every giggle.

In the midst of my roles as a dietitian, positive psychologist and coach, I advocate for a holistic approach to food. Recognizing the multifaceted role of food is fundamental, as many nutritional issues stem from forgetting its crucial role in providing not only sustenance but also emotional nourishment.

This cake embodies that philosophy, reminding us that food is a complex symphony of flavours and emotions. It’s a hug for our hearts, a gesture of love and a celebration of life.

So, what do you see here? I see a delicious reminder that food, in all its forms, enriches our lives in ways that extend beyond the plate. It’s a narrative of love, connection and the beautiful tapestry woven by the multifaceted nature of the nourishment we share. 🍰💖
