The BDD Foundation - The Body Dysmorphic Disorder Foundation

The BDD Foundation - The Body Dysmorphic Disorder Foundation With the right help and support BDD is treatable and beatable. It can affect both men and women, and makes sufferers excessively self-conscious.

The BDD Foundation is the only charity in the world exclusively dedicated to raising awareness and alleviating the suffering caused by Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). The term Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) describes a disabling preoccupation with perceived defects or flaws in appearance. They tend to check their appearance repeatedly and try to camouflage or alter the defects they see, often undergoing needless cosmetic treatments. Onlookers are frequently perplexed because they can see nothing out of the ordinary, but BDD causes devastating distress and interferes substantially with the ability to function socially. The BDD Foundation cares greatly about the distress BDD causes but we are not a crisis service. If you are looking for further information or support please contact our email helpline: support@bddfoundation.org Unfortunately, we are unable to respond to messages posted to Facebook or FB Messenger.

Perfectionism can sometimes play a role in BDD. So often, the pressure to meet an internal idea of ‘perfect’ can make perceived flaws feel impossible to move past.

That said, not everyone with BDD relates to perfectionism, and many people simply want to feel normal and unnoticeable.

If perfectionism or unrelenting standards come up for you, understanding these patterns can be a helpful step toward self-compassion and support 💙

Gentle reminder - because so often BDD will convince us that we have an appearance problem that needs fixing. And this urge to fix things often feels like an emergency.

A reminder that BDD is a psychological condition, and with the right support and treatment, a more peaceful and fulfilling life is possible 💙

🎙️ Have you listened to episode 36 of Beating BDD yet?

In December, we sat down with Dan, who shares his story with remarkable openness, honesty, and hope. For years, Dan’s life was governed by BDD and a strict set of rules and rituals designed to camouflage his perceived flaws. Today, he speaks about reaching a place where how he presents to others no longer defines him - and where each new day is no longer something to survive, but something to live.

In this conversation, Dan reflects on the powerful role spontaneity has played in his recovery and the courage it takes to imagine a life beyond rituals. As he says, “Recovery begins the moment you allow yourself the possibility that life can be bigger than your rituals.”

We are sure Dan’s inspiring progress and generous willingness to share his experience will bring encouragement, connection, and hope to anyone navigating their own BDD journey. Thank you, Dan.

We’re pleased to have been featured in Women’s Health, where our Managing Director, Kitty Newman, and Vice Chair, Amita Jassi, shared their insights on skin concerns and BDD.

Skin is one of the most common areas of concern in BDD, and the social pressures for perfect skin, alongside 'quick fix' skincare culture can intensify distress rather than relieve it. As Kitty Newman explains: “The fluctuating nature of skin fuels the need to control it, while the fear of bad skin, new lines or flaws can be very intense.”

We are pleased to see increasing discussion about the psychological impact of BDD in relation to skin, and the importance of recognising when skin concerns may be linked to BDD.

If you're struggling with constant worry about your skin, obsessive and repetitive behaviours or avoidance because of feelings about your skin - you're not alone. Reach out for support on support@bddfoundation.org 💙
