Part of our BTEC work this morning, was talking about fish that feed in real cold water temperature, on arriving at the river in the next few minutes we had a Chub, roach and dace and a chunky gudgeon in the net. some good river examples there.

Went to Dartford lakes this morning with a few students. The lakes are 90% frozen although on the A2 lake, on centre path, it is melting slowly. Plenty of silvers in the river, but hard going for pike in the small part of the lake that hasn't frozen.
Nice to get out though.

A shout out to anyone who shops at Waitrose Longfield.
Every year I look at ways of getting funds for Fishing for schools, for the work we do with schools and mental health groups.

The Waitrose Green Token Scheme, or Community Matters program, at Waitrose, Longfield, allows shoppers to support local good causes by receiving a green token at checkout and placing it in a box for one of three chosen local charities. This will take place over a three-month period from January to March. There is £1,500 which is then distributed proportionally to the three charities based on the number of tokens collected.

There may be some anglers that live locally and shop at Waitrose, Longfield who could support Fishing for Schools by putting their green token in our box.

Perhaps you could spread the word.

I have just returned from a short session trotting on the Darent' plenty of roach, but had to give in, in the end, as I couldn't feel my fingers.

To all my fishing friends wishing you all the best for 2026.

It's that time of the year after a cold snap where we are trying to work out where our next bite is going to come from. This morning we went quite a journey, into the Kent countryside, as we knew a place that comes up trumps even in the coldest weather. An enjoyable short session for silvers.

After the recent fall in temperature things looked really bleak for todays session at Grove farm.
The method that stopped a blankety blank was a hair rigged worm in conjunction with a ground bait feeder with chopped worm and maggot. The only bite of the day.
In freezing conditions, fishing today, was not for the faint hearted.

The fishing at Grove farm was not easy today. One of our students who had fished the pole early in the day and struggled had the foresight to switch to surface fishing in the afternoon after seeing fish topping and went on to have a cracking session.

In heavy rain, today at Shorne and fishing not easy, we tried something different a small maggot feeder with corn tipped with a red maggot on the hook, a great cocktail bait that still works.
