Today marks 20 years since the tragic events of the 7/7 London bombings. We pause to remember all those who lost their lives, those who were injured, and everyone whose lives were forever changed by that devastating day. Our thoughts are with them and their loved ones.

For me personally, 7th July 2005 was the last day of my 3-year day release Dispensing Optician Diploma at City and Islington College before my final professional exams began the following week. What should have been a day of celebrating hard work, friendships made, and looking ahead turned into one we will never forget — for all the wrong reasons. But we were the lucky ones.

Today, we take a moment to reflect and remember. 🕯

👁️ It’s Men’s Health Week – Don’t Overlook Your Eyes
Did you know men are less likely to attend regular health check-ups, including vital eye exams?
Your eyes can reveal early signs of serious health conditions like glaucoma, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

A quick eye test could make a big difference to your long-term health.

📅 Today is the final day of Myopia Awareness Week (19th–25th May 2025) – but the conversation around children’s eye health shouldn’t stop here.

At Page & Small Opticians, we offer two clinically proven ways to slow the progression of myopia (short-sightedness) in children.

👁️ MiSight daily contact lenses
&
👓 Stellest spectacle lenses

These treatments are safe, effective, and designed to help protect your child’s vision for the future. The earlier we start, the better the outcome.

We’ve been proud to support the campaign this week – encouraging:
📱 Less screen time
🌳 More outdoor play
👁️ And regular eye exams for children

📞 To book your child’s eye exam or to discuss their myopia and possible management options, call us on 0208 293 9493

📅 It’s Myopia Awareness Week! (19th–25th May 2025)
👁️ Did you know that by 2050, half the world’s population could be short-sighted (myopic)?

The rise is especially sharp in children – and two major risk factors are:
📱 Too much screen time
🌳 Not enough time spent outdoors

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 If a parent is myopic, their child is more likely to develop it too.

That’s why we’re supporting the campaign – raising awareness on how to protect your child’s vision:

✅ Encourage at least 90 minutes of outdoor time daily
✅ Limit prolonged close-up screen use
✅ Myopia often begins between ages 6–14 – even if your child seems fine, early detection is key

👓 We recommend an annual eye exam for all children.
🆓 NHS-funded eye exams are completely free for under 16s (and under 19s in full-time education) – book in for peace of mind.

Blossom is blooming… and so are hayfever symptoms!

If your eyes are feeling red, itchy, watery or just plain fed up, you’re not alone—pollen season is in full swing.

We’ve put together a helpful blog with simple tips to manage hayfever, including advice for contact lens wearers and the lowdown on eyelid wipes and soothing eye drops (yes—we stock those!).

Read the blog here:

Today is World Earth Day—an annual global event that raises awareness about environmental issues and shows support for protecting our planet.

At Page & Small Opticians we’re committed to reducing waste and supporting sustainability through our glasses recycling initiative:
• Usable glasses are cleaned, serviced, and donated to small charitable projects we support through our network of independent opticians.
• When lenses aren’t suitable for re-use, the frames are repurposed wherever possible.
• Everything else—including broken glasses and cases—is recycled responsibly through our partnership with MYgroup. Materials are mechanically sorted, and the plastic is transformed into durable boards used in construction, shopfitting, and joinery—an eco-friendly alternative to plywood.

Small actions can have a big impact. If you’ve got old glasses at home, bring them in—we’ll make sure they help someone else and stay out of landfill.

Just don’t forget to leave yourself a spare pair—just in case!

Our new website is finally live — and it’s been a long time coming!

We’re really excited to share www.pageandsmallopticians.co.uk with you.
It’s already packed with useful info, and while a few pages and features are still under construction, it’s up and running at last!

It’s been a bit of a journey getting here…
Back in 2017, we hired and paid for a brand-new website — only for the company to go into administration while Abi was on maternity leave. Then, last April, Google pulled the plug on its free business website service which had seen us through for a few years, leaving us without a site again.

So this new website really is a fresh start, and we’d love for you to take a look and let us know what you think!
