Stress in young people isn’t always obvious — and for many, it’s closely linked to body image and appearance 💭

Nearly half of young people report feeling stressed about how they look. Social media, comparison, and pressure to “fit in” can take a real toll on confidence and wellbeing 📱

Signs to look out for:
⚠️ Low self-esteem or negative self-talk
⚠️ Avoiding photos or social situations
⚠️ Constant comparison to others
⚠️ Anxiety about appearance

What helps?
💬 Open, supportive conversations
❤️ Reminding them their worth isn’t based on looks
🌿 Encouraging balance with social media
🤝 Access to support when they need it

Talking really does make a difference.
We offer low-cost counselling to support young people — because no one should struggle alone.

Meet our Placement Counsellors 👋

Sinead has been with us since 2024 and has helped many of our clients transform their lives in that time.

Here is more about Sinead:
I am an integrative therapist and coach with over 20 years’ experience supporting people through life’s challenges and transitions. My approach draws on a range of therapeutic perspectives, including Gestalt therapy, allowing me to work collaboratively with each client and meet them where they are.

As someone who is AuDHD and a parent to two neurodivergent teenagers, I bring both professional and lived experience to my work. I offer a compassionate, inclusive space where you can explore what matters to you and reconnect with yourself.

I understand many of the challenges of navigating a world that often assumes a “one size fits all” way of thinking and being.

What a beautiful day! It's so lovely to finally see some sunshine ☀

Spring has officially sprung at Vale House, the orange bulbs planted for 16 days of action are adding a splash colour to the terrace. 🏵

In simple terms, it’s your internal “alarm system” kicking in 🚨

When you’re stressed, your body releases hormones (like adrenaline and cortisol) that prepare you to react — often called the fight or flight response. This can be helpful in short bursts (like meeting a deadline or dealing with danger), but too much stress over time can affect your wellbeing.

Common signs of stress include:

Feeling anxious, irritable, or overwhelmed
Trouble sleeping or concentrating
Headaches or muscle tension
Changes in appetite
Feeling constantly “on edge”

What causes stress?
It can come from many areas of life, such as work, finances, relationships, health concerns, or big life changes.

The key thing to know:
Stress is a normal human experience but if it sticks around for too long, it’s important to find ways to manage it, like talking to someone, taking breaks, or seeking support.

The 'Our Own Words 2026: Adult Survivor Survey', led by survivors Saskia Lightburn-Ritchie (MyCWA / Domestic Abuse Experts) and Samantha Billingham (SODA / Stronger Beginnings), has published an interim report on its findings from submissions from male victims.

Out of 768 respondents, 65 identified as male, representing 8.5% of the total contributions. Of these:
63% of male respondents say the police did not help them
64% say the police made things more difficult
72% say their perpetrator faced no accountability at all
81% say a service made them feel less safe or caused further trauma
Only 3% felt professionals understood the full picture of risk they faced
The interim report states: “These are not men who avoided services. These are men who sought help and were failed. The most common barrier to seeking help in the first place? Fear of not being believed. Cited by 71%. For many, that fear turned out to be well founded."

One respondent wrote: "Abuse is real for us men. It nearly drives me to ending my life. Police and courts need training in male victim abuse and they need to fund specialist charities like the little one I thankfully found that saved my life."

However the report also found that the voluntary sector is doing what the statutory sector is not:
70% of male respondents who used voluntary or charity organisations said they helped
73% felt heard
The authors state: “The contrast with statutory services is not subtle. What does this report ask for? Not new rights. Not new laws. Delivery of existing ones. Believe men when they disclose. Do a risk assessment. Do not assume the man is the perpetrator. Commission services that can reach them.

“Thank you to every man who trusted us with their experience.”

If you are male victim or survivor, please do consider adding your voice the survey and please also share with any relevant networks.

Meet our Placement Counsellors 👋

Havva is another valuable addition to our placement Counsellor team.

Here is what she had to say:

Hi my name is Havva, I am a London born Turkish Cypriot and mother of 2 little ones.

I love being out in nature, dancing to music or you’ll most find me upside down practicing handstands during my yoga practice.
I am a former Metropolitan Police Officer and now working as a Yoga Therapist, Yoga Teacher and currently in training as an Integrative Yoga Psychotherapist.

Why I chose to be a counsellor:

My career in the Police, particularly experiencing the London Riots in 2011 as the first officer on scene, combined with adverse life experiences of deep and tragic loss, led me searching for someone to take my pain away and heal my heartache.
It wasn't until I felt truly held in the presence of another counsellor that I was able to reconnect with myself and turn towards my suffering in order to free myself from it.
I knew from then that I wasn’t broken and I wasn’t destined to a life of suffering which led me down the path of transformation and recognising the power of a therapeutic relationship with connecting you back to yourself and beginning your journey towards wellbeing.

Whatever situation you are in, you aren’t broken. Sometimes we need a little hand to help lead us back towards our light, back towards ourselves and Love!
