New Year Reset/Mental Detox

An Introduction to Hypnosis and NLP

When people ask what I do and I tell them I am a Clinical Hypnotherapist the next question is usually how does it work and what can it be used for? So I would like to take this opportunity to explain and give an overview, also for me to be able to share some useful tools that I use in my practice with my clients....

Answer some questions, ease the January Blues and set us up for 2022!

In this interactive workshop we will explore the fundamental principles of what Hypnotherapy is and the connection with the subconscious mind and our behaviours.

With a focus on stress and anxiety. The impact of lockdowns, social distancing and navigating uncertain times. Also how it is used for freedom from unwanted habits and phobias to performance enhancement and dating.

We will also do a short group guided hypnosis for relaxation reducing anxiety stress management and working through limiting beliefs. Showing you how to practice self hypnosis in the comfort of your own home.

With the news of Prince Harry having treatment for trauma using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) here is an overview of the therapy...... Alongside Hypnosis I also use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) it is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound. If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. EMDR therapy demonstrates that a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes. The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. Using the detailed protocols and procedures I help you activate your natural healing processes.

You do not have to choose between hypnosis or EMDR, you can choose both if you like depending on the issues that you are facing. While different in terms of techniques, the result that both treatments provide means basically the same results.
Safe: there are no drugs, no dangerous treatments to using either hypnosis or EMDR to address your issues. Both work on the power of your mind to overcome what you are facing and reach your goals, so there are no side effects, no unwanted results when using either treatment.
Effective: the results that hypnosis and EMDR have provided speak for themselves. This means that you can use either treatment and be confident in success thanks to their proven track record. Despite their effectiveness, nothing is 100%, so you will need to focus and commit to giving either method the best chance of success.
Versatile: what really makes both methods desirable is just how versatile they are in addressing different issues. Both will work in different situations which means that if you are facing new challenges, you can still rely on either technique to help get you through. For the many who have tried either or both, it means having the luxury of using the techniques to address the new issues in their lives.
You can choose either or both methods to help you address big issues that have held you back in life. Whether you are suffering from a traumatic event, facing up to a bad habit or behaviour that has put your health at risk, or if you want to overcome your fear and lead the life that you want, hypnosis and EMDR are two proven techniques that can help you achieve your goals.

How Hypnosis and the power of Subconscious works on Weight Loss...

Why dieting alone fails....
I help you reprogram your subconscious mind for a better relationship with eating and exercise. At this time of year leading up to summer and (fingers crossed) Holidays, many of us make a promise to ourselves to “lose weight” and go on diets of many different kinds and embark on incorporating some form of exercise to our routines. Well...what a waste of time! You will be on a diet of some kind for the rest of your life. What happens when you come of the diet? Dieters in the main fail and let me explain the reason.
When I work with clients, on weight, reduction there is no diet and we do not focus on “losing weight”. There are no forbidden foods! I do not want my clients to have any forbidden foods. How can it be right for someone, whom you have never met to tell you what you can and cannot eat? Ok...got your attention now?

We are, all programmed in our subconscious mind, from childhood to go and find whatever we lose. Remember when you were a child losing your shoe or toy and your parents telling you go look for it and find whatever it was. Therefore, now when you ‘lose’ weight your subconscious mind kicks in and tells you to go and find the weight you have lost. Using Hypnosis and the power of your own subconscious mind we start by changing your thinking to the fact you are deliberately getting rid of something you have no need for...your excess weight. As you deliberately get rid of ‘it’ your subconscious mind realises this and gets on with something else.
Makes sense does it not?
So now, you can choose what you want to eat.

A mid-nineties reanalysis of 18 hypnotic studies showed that hypnotherapy clients who learned self-hypnosis lost twice as much weight as those who didn’t (and, in one study, kept it off two years after treatment ended), hypnotherapy has remained a well-kept weight loss secret.

HYPNOTHERAPY FOR ANXIETY
In these highly uncertain times, do you have Anxiety?

Anxiety is best described as unhelpful thinking patterns we experience when our mind fixates on uncertainty, negatively, and threat. Anxiety is described as having both physical and mental symptoms. It can occur on its own as a response to stress or it can trigger stress, intensifying the anxiety and in worse cases leading to panic attacks. We can not control anxiety from occurring as it’s our brains automatic survival mechanism. We can however uncover the root cause/ triggers and learn new strategies in how to respond. This is how I help my clients with Hypnotherapy for Anxiety
Fundamentally there are at least three ways in which Hypnotherapy can help with Anxiety
1 Hypnotherapy induces calm brainwave states, as you begin to relax you become more inwardly focused and shift into alpha wave patterns. This allows you to access the zone where there is improved memory recall, reduction in pain, reduced anxiety states and a better response to stress.
When the hypnotic state deepens we access mainly theta waves. There we are in the range where our internal awareness is increased. You are deeply relaxed, allowing your conscious mind to relax and stop the loop of negative self talk, from the monkey mind, focusing on signals from within and creating an opportunity for learning and updating and reprogramming.
2 In the Hypnotherapy session I will give you pre- and post-hypnotic suggestions along with personally sourced metaphors to help you cope with anxiety-inducing situations.
For example many people are anxious about the current pandemic and isolation resulting from lockdown . During your Hypnotherapy for Anxiety session I may use phrases such as….When you have thoughts about this pandemic, focusing on your breathing or becoming aware of your feet planted firmly on the ground makes you feel more relaxed
Those words are embedded into your subconscious so that when those distressing thoughts come in, you’re able to cope better.
3 I use Hypnotherapy to harness the power of neuroplasticity, by allowing us to set up new neural pathways (connections) in the brain towards reducing Anxiety. We have learnt how to become anxious so we can also unlearn it. This is called forgetting.

I also teach my clients self Hypnosis and grounding techniques to use in between and after our sessions to support them.

Resent Research reveals that hypnotherapy for anxiety is very effective when combined with other therapeutic interventions such as NLP, EMDR and CBT.
Certain physical and medical conditions can make us anxious. For example, undergoing a medical procedure can cause emotional distress. In this regard, in a 2008 systematic review revealed that Hypnotherapy was an effective treatment in reducing Anxiety related to surgical procedures (bypass surgery, cataract surgery, plastic surgery).
In a study in 2018 at University of Baylor Hypnotherapy was successful in alleviating the anxiety of post-menopausal women with hot flashes.
Several studies have also explored the efficacy of Hypnotherapy in treating specific Anxiety disorders in a 2015 study Hypnotherapy for Anxiety helped obstetric patients overcome their post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) before giving birth. Resulting in a positive birth experience.
In 2018, a study identified Hypnotherapy for Anxiety as an effective treatment method for generalised anxiety disorder (GAD). When used in combination with meditation and mindfulness can help people who suffer from this disorder learn new helpful strategies, worry less, and feel more hopeful about the future.

In a review in 2019, 15 studies concluded that the average participant who underwent Hypnotherapy for Anxiety had a remarkable 84% more than those who didn’t receive it.

So, if you’re constantly apprehensive and restless, Hypnotherapy for Anxiety can be a non-pharmacologic and non-invasive but effective anxiety treatment to consider😀

How to manage an anxious state
Some important tips for managing anxiety during the Corona Virus, using some practices from NLP and mindfulness.
The idea of choosing your state is something that can be counter-intuitive. A commonly held misconception is that we feel a certain way, which will probably pass, but that there isn’t much that we can do about it. In NLP however, we do believe that states can change when you use the correct resources.
There is a classic NLP formula that neatly summaries all of NLP:
Our Present State (i.e. how we feel right now) added to certain Resources (principles and practices) creates a Desired State (i.e. how we would like to feel. Put in another way:
PS + R = DS
The resources in this context have a fairly wide meaning. It includes anything which helps to change your state.
The first tip from Pacing and Leading is the resource of acceptance. Simply allow yourself to accept that you are not in a good state and that this is ok. This may sound simple, but for even the most advanced practitioner, this principle can be really challenging.
One of my recent clients who practiced mindfulness daily, found once she realised that she was simply allowed to feel as she did in the present moment, without stressing herself to instantly feel ‘good’, it suddenly opened up an entirely new world. Any the feeling passed.
This insight allowed her to access what she already knew – all of the various mediations she had been practicing over the years (yet struggling to really put into practice). It is a strange truism that by simply allowing yourself to experience your feelings, without pushing them away, but without magnifying them either – they begin to naturally transform themselves.
Once you have done this, you are ready to try some meditations there are an abundance on YouTube Or, alternatively, you can download an app such as Headspace or Calm.

I especially recommend the walking mediation practice, which takes just under nine minutes. It is a great way to get outdoors and spend a few minutes practicing mindfulness while you walk. Once you have used the mediation a few times, you can do it on your own and repeat as necessary to see if you have forgotten any of the steps.
