We offer bright and informal teaching spaces, access to some of the most experienced teachers and a wealth of resources on the Alexander Technique. If, like many, you've read about the Technique and wondered what it is and how it can help, Pimlico Centre is the place for you. The Technique
"The technique doesn't teach you something new to do. It teaches you how to bring more practical intelligence
into what you are already doing; how to eliminate stereotyped responses; how to deal with habit and change. It leaves you free to choose your own goal but gives you a better use of yourself while you work towards it." Jones
The Alexander Technique doesn't involve learning special exercises, buying expensive equipment or wearing lycra! It's nothing like yoga or Pilates but neither does it have much in common with the talking therapies. The Technique is a fascinating and often life changing method by which you can learn more about how you move and think. It is at heart a simple process of increasing your ability to be self-aware during activities and freeing yourself from unwanted habits. As babies and toddlers most of us tend to function well. We are mobile and alert, responsive and alive to the minute-by-minute demands upon us. As we age we tend to acquire all sorts of mental and physical habits that restrict our mobility and our alertness. By studying everyday activities such as walking, sitting, standing, reaching out, picking things up, talking and typing, you can learn how to prevent these bad habits and restore coordination and ease of movement. Pupils experience reduced stress and tension and freedom from many of the causes of pain. A classic hallmark of the Technique is a sense of lightness of movement leading to improved posture, healthier breathing and, for many, greater happiness. The ultimate aim of Alexander lessons is for you to learn how to be as free as possible from habits that limit you - both mental and physical. It is a stimulating and practical journey into the psychophysical quality of your life.
