Happy ! This week, we want to share the incredible achievements of six individuals (dubbed Six Irons), who earlier this year took on the ultimate challenge - the Hamburg Ironman, to raise money for the hospice.
A year ago, none of them had ever raced a triathlon, let alone an Ironman, which consists of swimming 3.8km, cycling 180km and running a marathon all in one go.
However, Emily, Hannah, Samy and brothers Sam, Jake and Mickey, all took to training seven days a week, sometimes in extreme icy weather, to prepare for the challenge and raise vital funds for the hospice who cared for Emily’s dad Noel in 2018. “The support they gave our family was extraordinary,” said Emily. “Racing for them made the whole experience meaningful beyond miles.”
Sadly, Mickey was unable to race on the day due to an injury, but the others all managed to complete their ironman, and altogether they have raised an amazing £10,324.53 for the hospice!
“What did we learn?” Emily recalls, “That triathlon is expensive, exhausting, and not for the faint-hearted. But it’s also life changing. We grew stronger, together. We laughed a lot, fell off bikes, cried on curbs, swam into buoys and banks, swore at hills, shared snacks, shared goals. We weren’t the fastest team, we didn’t have the flashiest kit, but we had heart and each other. Would we do it again? Without a doubt.”
A big well done to the Six Irons team and thank you for all your support! 💙
