As the return to school approaches, it’s important to make sure children with asthma are prepared, supported, and safe in the classroom.

Asthma is one of the most common long-term conditions in children — but with the right planning, it can be well managed at school or nursery.

Here are a few key steps to help your child feel confident and ready:

✔️ Ensure their inhaler is up to date and clearly labelled
✔️ Provide the school with a written asthma action plan
✔️ Check staff know how to recognise symptoms and what to do in an emergency
✔️ Make sure your child knows how and when to use their inhaler
✔️ Inform the school of any triggers (e.g. exercise, cold air, allergies)

Guidance from Asthma + Lung UK highlights the importance of communication between parents, schools, and carers to keep children safe and supported throughout the school day.

A little preparation now can make a big difference to your child’s confidence, safety, and wellbeing.

Choosing the right first aid training provider isn’t just a tick-box exercise it’s about making sure your team can respond confidently when it really matters.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), employers are responsible for selecting a competent provider as first aid training is no longer centrally approved. That means doing your due diligence is key.

🚨 Measles is making a comeback and it’s preventable.

We’re seeing a rise in measles cases, largely due to lower vaccination rates. Measles isn’t just a “childhood illness” it can lead to serious complications like pneumonia, brain inflammation, and even death.

💉 The MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) is safe, effective, and the best protection we have. Two doses provide long-lasting immunity and help protect those who can’t be vaccinated, including babies and vulnerable individuals.

🧑‍⚕️ As part of our commitment to community health and first aid awareness, we urge everyone to:
✔️ Check your vaccination status
✔️ Ensure your children are up to date
✔️ Speak to a healthcare professional if unsure

🤝 Vaccination doesn’t just protect you it protects everyone around you.

Let’s work together to stop the spread and keep our communities safe.

First aid compliance isn’t just a requirement it’s a responsibility.

Being prepared can make the difference between a minor incident and a life-threatening emergency. Ensuring your workplace or organisation is compliant means having the right equipment, up-to-date training, clear procedures, and a culture that prioritises safety.

Ask yourself:
• Are your first aid kits fully stocked and regularly checked?
• Are staff trained and confident to respond?
• Are procedures clear and accessible to everyone?
• Are incidents properly recorded and reviewed?

Compliance isn’t about ticking boxes it’s about protecting people.

A teacher noticed something wasn’t right—and it saved a child’s life.

In a recent incident, a young boy was choking, but instead of obvious distress, he showed subtle signs that something was wrong. Thanks to quick thinking and awareness, the situation was recognised in time and action was taken.

Choking isn’t always loud or dramatic.
Sometimes there’s no coughing, no shouting—just silence, unusual behaviour, or panic in the eyes.

Key signs to look for:
• Sudden quietness during eating
• Inability to speak or cough
• Clutching the throat
• Changes in colour (red or blue)
• Panicked or confused behaviour

This is why first aid training matters. Recognising the signs early and acting quickly can be the difference between life and death.

Would you know what to look for?

Mini chocolate eggs may seem harmless, but they can pose a serious choking risk—particularly for young children.

Their small, round, and hard shape makes them easy to swallow whole, increasing the likelihood of airway obstruction. During Easter and other celebrations, it’s important to be mindful of age-appropriate treats.

To reduce risk:
• Avoid giving mini eggs to young children
• Choose larger, softer alternatives
• Ensure children are supervised while eating

Awareness can prevent avoidable emergencies.
