What is the difference between plaque and calculus? 🤔

Plaque is a sticky, colourless film that constantly forms on your teeth.

Bacteria lives in plaque and produces acids that can cause tooth decay and inflammes gum tissue. This triggers an inflammatory response in your body, which can eventually lead to gingivitis and periodontal disease.

If plaque is not removed regularly through brushing and flossing, it hardens into calculus (also known as tartar).

❌ Tartar can’t be brushed away—you’ll need a dental pro to remove it during a visit with your hygienist.

To effectively control plaque and calculus, it’s essential to:

✅ brush your teeth twice daily
✅ floss or interdental brushes at least once a day
✅ visit a hygienist for regular maintenance appointments

A wisdom tooth extraction to correct an actual problem or to prevent problems that may occur in the future.

When wisdom teeth are erupting, a number of problems can occur:

🦷Your jaw may not be large enough for them, and they may become impacted and unable to erupt correctly through your gums.

🦷If your wisdom teeth cannot erupt properly, they can impinge on the adjacent teeth and make it more difficult to clean these teeth. This can sometimes result in interdental decay.

🦷One or more of your wisdom teeth may erupt at an awkward angle, with the top of tooth facing forward, backward, or to either side. This will again make cleaning more difficult and if bacteria/food gets trapped in the gums it can lead to pericoronitis, a localised infection in the tissues surrounding the wisdom teeth.

What is Gum Disease?
Periodontal gum disease include gingivitis and periodontitis, which are chronic bacterial infections that affect the gums and the bone supporting the teeth. They begin with the bacteria in the plaque (the sticky, colourless film that forms on your teeth on a daily basis), which causes the gums to become red and swollen and to bleed easily.
