Strengthening Specialist Care in West Africa: The African Medical Centre of Excellence in partnership with King’s College Hospital, London.

A delegation from King’s Commercial, King's College Hospital NHS, London, and The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, in Manchester, recently visited The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) as part of our ongoing partnership, supporting AMCE’s development as a leading specialist healthcare institution in West Africa.

Established in partnership with King’s College Hospital London, the AMCE is rapidly becoming a landmark facility for the region, bringing advanced capabilities in oncology, cardiovascular medicine, haematology and modern diagnostics closer to the communities that need them.

The AMCE continues to expand its services, invest in workforce development and build strong referral networks, positioning itself as one of West Africa’s most advanced specialist care centres.
The collaborative model, with King’s College Hospital London, supports the development of local expertise and high-quality clinical pathways, helping improve access to specialist care for patients who previously had to travel abroad for treatment.

🏥 A group of patients have been treated with new laser technology for vascular disease at King's.

The Interventional Radiology Team at King’s has been trialling innovative laser catheter technology. This non-surgical method uses laser energy to clear plaque from arteries, aiming to improve outcomes for patients whose condition has been resistant to other treatments.

Trudy Watkins, a patient, said, “It’s completely changed my life – I saw an immediate change to my mobility. I’m driving again and I feel like I can be a proper mum to my children now.”
