Today is World IBD Day, a chronic digestive disease affecting 10 million people worldwide causing serious abdominal pain, weight loss and diarrhoea.

IBD – inflammatory bowel disease - is a term for a group of digestive disorders which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Patient Georgia Chrysandreas is now in remission but warns there is a lot of misinformation online about IBD. Georgia was successfully treated by Professor Naila Arebi, Consultant Gastroenterologist and Endoscopist at The London Clinic.

Professor Arebi said, “When IBD presents with pain and diarrhoea it can be difficult to differentiate from IBS because IBS is more common. The symptoms of IBS are abdominal pain, bloating and change in bowel habit. It is not uncommon that people are misdiagnosed for many years such as Georgia, because IBS is also common in young people.”

She added, “With the large volume of online information and now AI tools, patients need to also be wary of non-verified sites and non-clinically proven commercial treatments – relying on these can invoke anxiety and harm.”

The BBC recently reported on a new pilot study at Oxford University – offering a new CT scan technique combined with a molecular tracer to pick up early endometriosis, which affects one in 10 women in the UK.

In response, Consultant Gynaecologist & Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon at The London Clinic, Hemant Vakaria said: “It’s really encouraging to see this research receiving attention. For anyone working in this field, the diagnostic challenge of endometriosis is one of the most frustrating aspects of care. Reports have shown an average wait of over nine years for a diagnosis which is simply not acceptable, and anything that helps to close that gap deserves serious attention.

The study results are very promising. That said, this remains a small trial, and before we can consider routine clinical use, we will need larger, prospective studies. It would be also good to see a direct comparison with specialist pelvic ultrasound, which in experienced hands remains an extremely powerful diagnostic tool for endometriosis.

What gives me most hope is that research like this reflects a growing recognition that endometriosis is a serious, debilitating condition that has for too long been minimised and under-investigated. The women I see in clinic have often spent years being dismissed, managing severe pain without answers, and losing significant quality of life in the process.

Anyone who is struggling with painful or heavy periods, pain with in*******se, or bowel and bladder symptoms around their cycle, should not accept being told this is normal.

Seeking help early, asking for a specialist referral, and asking for a second opinion is really important."

Springtime can be miserable for hay-fever sufferers but spare a thought for the estimated 20% of the UK population who suffer year-round chronic rhinitis.

Triggered by allergies, dust, pollens, scents, and even a temperature change, symptoms caused by inflammation include nasal congestion, runny nose, post-nasal drip, sneezing and itching, affecting the eyes, ears or throat.

Mr Jonathan Joseph, Consultant ENT Surgeon at The London Clinic specialises in sinus disease and nasal problems. He has been treating patients, like Richard, with ClariFix a minimally invasive medical procedure using cryotherapy – controlled freezing – to target the overactive posterior nasal nerve, responsible for excessive mucus production and inflammation in chronic rhinitis.
