When Daria Svalova, 32, first walked into a pole dance studio, she found a passion for pole dancing she didn’t know would become a real love.

But in December 2023, everything came crashing down — quite literally — during a single move that pushed her body beyond its limit.

Months of rest and specific physio and exercises didn’t solve the issue. A scan revealed the truth – it wasn’t inflammation but a tear in her supraspinatus tendon and she needed surgery.

Throughout her recovery, Daria relied heavily on Rochelle Francois, a Senior Physio at The London Clinic to help build up her strength and remind her of her progress and eventual recovery and return to the pole.

Every three minutes, someone in the UK dies from cardiovascular disease and according to the World Health Organisation, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide.

As February is Heart Month it seemed apt to find out more about London Clinic Consultant Cardiologist Professor Ghosh, who happens to be the UK’s first Cardio-Oncologist, looking after all heart issues in cancer patients.

But what is cardio-oncology?

Professor Ghosh says, "In the simplest of terms, cardio-oncology is the cardiac care of cancer patients. This care can be because a cancer patient has pre-existing heart disease, or it can be that the treatment that's offered to a cancer patient may potentially cause heart disease, or it can also be directed to a cancer patient who's finished treatment and has, as a result, developed heart disease."

Bunions are a common condition with 1 in 4 people having a bunion. Whilst men can also develop bunions, they are more prevalent in women (9:1 ratio). For most people, it is inherited; family history and genetics play a large role in the likelihood of getting bunions, with conditions such as flat feet and lax ligaments may also play a part.

A bunion occurs when the long bone (metatarsal) that connects to the big toe, deviates inward. This movement creates the bunion prominence on the inside of the foot. The prominence is normal bone in the wrong position rather than the growth of new bone.

A common misconception is footwear being an initial cause of bunions. This is generally not the case but can make an existing bunion worse.

The most common symptoms are pain and discomfort.

We’re delighted to share that Mandy, Clinical Nurse Specialist in our Radiotherapy department, has been named as our final 2025 DAISY Award Honouree.

Founded in 1999, DAISY Foundation™ recognises extraordinary nurses across the world who dedicate themselves to their patients and families. Created by J. Patrick Barnes’ family, the awards were inspired by their experiences with the nurses who looked after Patrick during his illness and eventual passing.

Mandy was nominated by our Head of Operations for Cancer Care, Matthew, who shared: “Mandy is an exceptional nurse who provides outstanding care to every patient undergoing radiotherapy.

“Mandy treats each patient with the utmost dignity and respect, going above and beyond to meet their needs. She is deeply respected by patients, who often return just to update her on their progress and to express their gratitude.”

Professor Prokar Dasgupta, London Clinic Professor of Urology, and one of the world’s leading robotic urological surgeons, has an editorial on telesurgery in The BMJ. (28 January)

He writes: ‘Interest in telesurgery has been renewed around 20 years after it first came into use.

‘The first clinical telesurgery was a robotic cholecystectomy in 2001 between New York and Strasbourg, using a robot called Zeus (Computer Motion, USA) with the connection provided by French Telecom at considerable expense.

This was followed by the first randomised controlled trial of telesurgery between Guy’s Hospital, UK, and Johns Hopkins Hospital, USA, using a percutaneous access to the kidney robot, showing that although the robot was slower than a human hand it was more accurate at inserting a needle into the kidney.....

Thereafter the da Vinci robotic system (Intuitive Surgical, USA) became the main surgical robot in the market for 20 years.

Although it revolutionised surgery, it was not built with telesurgery in mind. As a result, the concept of telesurgery gradually faded and traditional robotic surgery with the surgeon and patient in the same room has been the norm, until recently.'

It’s National Apprenticeships Week (9-15 February) - and we are spotlighting the career journey of Ryan McGrory, an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) whose journey at The London Clinic spans more than a decade.

Ryan originally joined The London Clinic in February 2011 as an enthusiastic Bank Theatre Assistant, with no prior hospital experience or exposure to an operating theatre. Theatre Assistants are typically responsible for preparing and cleaning theatres, managing equipment and stock, and supporting patients before or after surgery.

“I always wanted to work in healthcare, where I could support patients and make a meaningful difference. I chose The London Clinic because of its excellent reputation, high standards of patient care, and clear focus on developing staff,” Ryan said.

He progressed to a Theatre Assistant role in September 2011. Ryan completed 18 months of in-house NVQ training, becoming a Healthcare Assistant in July 2015.

With continued support from the Clinic, he embarked on a three-year Operating Department Practice Integrated Apprenticeship in collaboration with London South Bank University, qualifying as an ODP in July 2025.

“I was the first colleague at The London Clinic to move from Healthcare Assistant to ODP. Balancing full-time work with studies – and everything else in life – was a huge challenge. Time management was key, but the support from colleagues and loved ones made all the difference,” Ryan says.

For anyone considering a career at The London Clinic, Ryan’s advice is simple: “It’s a great place to grow, learn and build a long-term career in healthcare. I’m now helping to train the next generation of ODPs.”
