Would you sit in an empty restaurant on your own? 🤷🏾‍♂️

From my experience, the answer is usually no. There is something quite isolating about it (a restaurant in Bangkok provided stuffed Pandas to people eating alone https://www.ndtv.com/offbeat/a-panda-sits-with-diners-eating-alone-at-this-thailand-restaurant-2229343/amp/1). But then I thought, if we all had that approach, who is the hero that would enter first?

I had a conversation with some friends about why they’ve never sought support for their mental health despite their mate (me) being a Trainee Psychologist. Aside from the financial barrier, the most common responses were they didn’t feel that the day to day things they experienced warranted it, as well as that they didn’t know what therapy entailed. However, my question is, how will you ever know if you don’t try?

The theme for World Mental Health Day is “Make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority”. For many, there are several barriers (outside of our control) to access support, but I challenge you to be curious about the things you can do.

If the menu looks good, sit in the damn restaurant.

You alright mate? 🤷🏾‍♂️

Sound familiar? Something that has come up quite a bit over the last couple of weeks in client sessions is difficulty in identifying and expressing/communicating what they were feeling… being unable to articulate it or put it in words.

I have to admit, I too have had fluctuations of similar experiences over the last month. Some say that mercury is in retrograde. I’m not sure though... but maybe it is 🤷🏾‍♂️. I think there are many things currently happening (and things that have happened) around us that our minds and bodies are responding to, on an unconscious level, and this can be difficult to name.

However, being able to identify and label a sensation or feeling is incredibly useful and powerful, as it helps us to make sense of things, as that is how we are by nature.

If this sounds familiar or of interest to you or someone you know, then I’d be happy to see how best I could help navigate this.

Let’s have a chat.

Hello 👋🏽

I feel like it’s been while. So, I thought I’d use this as an opportunity to (re)introduce myself.

Amongst many things, I am an Osteopath and am 1/3 of the way through my doctorate in Counselling Psychology, to train as a Psychologist. Surprisingly, over the last year, I’ve had quite a few people asking me whether I still do Osteopathy - indeed, I very much do.

Therefore, I’ve decided for the months of August and September to offer a 20% discount to new and existing clients for their next in-clinic Osteopathy appointment.

Drop an email to info@marvinblake.com to book/enquire 📩

Additionally, from September, I will be taking on a handful of clients for Health & Emotional Performance Coaching, as well as Counselling. If this is of interest to you or someone you might know, or you have any other queries, please get in touch via email and I will get back to you as soon as I can. However, more information will follow soon.

Last year (Mental Health Awareness Week) I started a podcast ( ) around emotions and mental health as a passion project, as I spoke so much about it to people. I was lucky that

Justin was happy to be my first guest and share his story, but life has been giving me KOs since. Since last May, I’ve started my doctorate to train as a Counselling Psychologist, have continued my work as an Osteo and PT, and essentially have been trying to make the most out of life, so it doesn’t pass me by. It’s been incredibly difficult balancing everything and as a result, I’ve not been able to invest much time into anything else than those mentioned.

However, this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week theme for May is Loneliness and I can’t get over how relevant a theme it is. So many of us are in fact quite lonely, with or without realising, and I’m not talking about solitude. It might not be something we’re ready or will ever be ready to admit to ourselves, but my hope for you, for us, is that we can eventually find our tribe, our people. Where we feel connected to ourselves, others and the world. (Christ that sounds cheesy AF, but I mean it - whatever it looks like).

And also, I do hope to pick things up again in the near future, but I gotta look after me first. Till then, Best Wishes and Warm Regards.

. How are you? Honestly? (Feel free to drop me a DM)
This idea is something that has resonated with me for a very long time. I often surprise people when I recall details from conversations that were had years previous. However, I’ve come to appreciate that for those who do not connect as well in conversation or interaction, it isn’t always intentional. There is so much going on within them, as there is within you, when you realise how absent they are whilst asking you how you’re doing.
Nonetheless, it is such an underwhelming experience. Sometimes I tell people to skip the small talk and not ask me how I am because they really didn’t give a crap and I don’t have the energy for empty chatter (sassy, I know 💁🏾‍♀️). Interestingly, this confrontation or calling out of their absence is quite startling and uncomfortable for them. We have somehow managed to get to a place where we act a certain way but don’t expect to be seen that way.
This is by no means an attack, it’s uncomfortable collective learning, as we are all guilty in some way. So my questions to you today are, “How are you?” and “Do your words reflect your actions?”

If you’ve met me, you may or may not already know that I can be fairly talkative 🙆🏾‍♂️. Truth is, I learn so much through conversation. And to my family, friends and patients who have encouraged the chatter, we’ve realised realised that the things discussed could be of use to others. Therefore, with that in mind, alongside my burning passion for physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, I’ve decided to create my very own Intensive Care Unit (ICU) - 👁 The Podcast.
I’ve sat on this idea and content for about 6 months and hadn’t done much with it for multiple reasons. So I’m putting this here to hold myself accountable to get this on your smart devices for November 2020.
My hope is to use it as a medium that creates community for learning and growth - one where differences are welcomed, and hard and necessary conversations can be had or at least entertained in a critical, constructive and compassionate way.
If what I’ve said above made you uncomfortable... then you’re welcome 😊.

Black, white or coloured...
Found out about this brand after slightly obsessing over and being inspired by the series on Netflix during lockdown where I saw wearing one of these jumpers. With regards to the uniqueness of mental health issues in today’s society, I think does such a great job at capturing the current complexities of mental and emotional conflict within social groups today. It’s crazy heavy, but relevant and super educational. So if you’re emotionally prepared, I’d recommend checking it out and checking out this brand as well! (This is not an ad).
Nonetheless, it only takes a moment. So check in on your people. Furthermore, remember to check in on yourself. Be your best mate - or at least try. 🤷🏾‍♂️

I was listening to Unlocking Us with and and this really resonated with me.
Think about it for a sec. How do you SEE me, if you can’t hear me? At times I think we forget that ‘listening’ or ‘hearing’ are verbs...verbs are action words. To listen or to hear is an active process that requires engagement. I highlight this because of how easy it is to overlook the people we interact with because we have so much else going on in our lives.
You’d be surprised how great an impact being ‘in the present moment’ with someone makes. I mean, have you not felt it yourself? How seen you feel if someone fully engages with you? When someone fully listens to you rather than talks over you or says how much they know exactly what you’re going through when they probably don’t? I guess what I’m saying is, sometimes all you have to do is listen. And if you’re not in the position to do so at the time, then say it. There’s no shame in expressing that. You and I both know we’d rather someone be fully ‘there’ with us rather than be there half-assed. Listening often provides perspective beyond measure, so could you hear me out?

Guess who’s back?! 😬 (you get the joke? 😅)
That’s right. I’m back in clinic as of this week operating ad hoc hours across my Moorgate and Victoria sites for now. And as times have changed, PPE will be worn by myself throughout the treatment as recommended by PHE.
Please get in touch via email at info@marvinblake.com or drop me a DM here if you’d like to book an appointment or for further information.
