DXA scans measure bone mineral density — not bone quality, structure, or fracture resilience.
Studies show people can fracture even with normal or mildly reduced BMD because bone strength also depends on microarchitecture, turnover rate, muscle support, balance, and metabolic health (NIH, PubMed).
This is why relying on one number can miss early bone weakness.
True bone health requires context:
• Interpreting DXA alongside symptoms and risk factors
• Assessing metabolic and inflammatory health
• Evaluating muscle strength and balance
• Personalised prevention — not generic advice
At London Osteoporosis Clinic, our Bone Revive Programme, led by Dr Taher Mahmud (Consultant Rheumatologist & Co-Founder), looks beyond scans to identify real fracture risk and long-term bone resilience.
