A reminder that the London Society of the New Lacanian School’s programme for 2024-25 will open with a Cartel Study Day dedicated to Jacques-Alain Miller’s rich and orienting text, Analysis Laid Bare (L’os d’une cure). This will take place on the 19th of October 2024 and will be a hybrid event, on Zoom and in person in London. We are thrilled that we will be joined by Neus Carbonell, current NLS Cartel Delegate, member of the Escuela Lacaniana de Psicoanálisis (ELP, Spain), the NLS, and the World Association of Psychoanalysis (WAP).

Jacques-Alain Miller offers us a precise decoding of conspiracy theory. Why and how is it spreading today?

Working by collection and connection, the conspiracy discourse is a purveyor of meaning. And it begs for more, to the point of becoming a veritable ‘semantic pandemic’.

Driven by a logic of its own, it interprets and arranges reality by denying contingency: ‘It's not by chance that...’. The conspiracist is certain of knowing what we don't know. With access to the knowledge of the real, the conspiracist reveals its secret Cause.

It is no longer a question of a ‘cogito’, but of an absolute ‘I know’. J.-A. Miller notes that scientific discourse is a condition for the emergence of conspiracy discourse. This is also the case with psychoanalysis, although it follows a completely different logic.

As a remedy or antidote to a discourse starved of meaning, how does psychoanalysis situate itself, and what place can it occupy in the contemporary world?
