Ingrown toenails are preventable! ๐ฃ
In the UK alone, up to four million people suffer with ingrown toenails, with an estimated 10,000 cases diagnosed each year.
They are especially common in teenagers and young adults due to activity levels, footwear, and poor nail cutting habits.
An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain and swelling. As the inflammation builds, the risk of infection increases - sometimes requiring antibiotics and even surgery.
So how do you stop them before they even start?
โ๏ธ Cut nails straight across - avoid rounding the corners.
โ๏ธ Don't cut them too short - this encourages the nail to grown into the skin.
โ๏ธ Wear properly fitted shoes - tight footwear is a major cause.
โ๏ธ Keep feet clean and dry - this reduces the risk of infection.
โ๏ธ Avoid picking or tearing nails - always use the proper tools.
If youโre starting to notice redness, tenderness or swelling - donโt ignore it. Early treatment makes all the difference.
