We're proud to have received excellent feedback in The Care Quality Commission's children and young people's survey.

251 patients aged 0 to 15 and their parents and carers had their say on their hospital experiences. The results have been recently published by The Care Quality Commission and we've been rated as 'better' or 'much better' than the national average in a number of key areas.

Our teams were rated particularly highly for supporting children and young people to manage their pain while in hospital. They also received high ratings for listening to and communicating clearly with children, young people and their families.

Say hi to some of our team who you may meet at the new Harold Moody Health Centre in Southwark. 👋

We provide speech and language therapy, health visiting, school nursing, breastfeeding, and midwifery services at the site. Our Aylesbury neighbourhood nursing team and the nutrition and dietetics weight management service are also based at the Harold Moody Health Centre.

Professor Ian Abbs, Chief Executive of Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “The new Harold Moody Health Centre puts our health services at the heart of the Aylesbury Estate.

"It provides an opportunity for us to make a lifelong positive impact on the lives of many people who live in the area, particularly children, parents and carers. It will also enable our staff to forge valuable links in our community, where it is most needed.”

Say hello to trainee pharmacy technician Neil Scott. 👋

Q: How did you get into your role?
A: Back in 2002, I joined the Territorial Army. For nearly two decades, I was deployed in several countries including Northern Ireland, Afghanistan and Cyprus. After returning to the UK, I decided to transition into a medical role.

In June 2021, I was fortunate to secure a role as a pharmacy porter at Royal Brompton Hospital. I enjoyed the challenge of a new career and was soon motivated to push myself further. With some gentle encouragement from the team, I am now completing a qualification for a pharmacy technician role.

Q: What does your job involve?
A: As a trainee pharmacy technician, I attend college once a week and spend the other four days gaining hands-on experience in pharmacy services. This includes developing the knowledge and skills required to qualify as a registered pharmacy technician. I have found myself working across the Trust with various specialties, from oncology and renal at Guy’s Hospital to cardiology, respiratory and paediatrics at the Royal Brompton.

Q:Tell us about a typical day
A: My current rotation is on the cardiology wards at the Royal Brompton, where I work closely with specialist pharmacists and technicians. A key part of my role involves compiling a detailed medication history for patients using multiple sources of information and verifying it with them directly. This helps ensure that doctors and pharmacists can accurately prescribe and screen medications, avoiding potentially dangerous interactions with any existing treatments.

Q: What’s the best thing about your job?
A: For me, it is the ward rotations. I really enjoy interacting with patients and learning about a wide variety of medical conditions and how different medications are used to treat them.

NHS England is leading a collaboration with the Trust and a number of universities to recruit former members of the Armed Forces into healthcare roles, where their skills are vitally needed. The programme is open to serving and retired Armed Forces personnel and their families who are interested in retraining in a range of healthcare roles.

We’ve been celebrating 28 fantastic staff who have clocked up 700 years of loyal service to the NHS between them! 🎉⭐

The Trust’s Long Service Awards recognise the outstanding commitment of staff who have worked a minimum 25 years in the NHS.

This year, housekeepers, a maintenance craftsperson (electrical), a children’s community physiotherapist, an assistant service manager, a metastatic breast cancer nurse and a consultant urological surgeon were among the worthy recipients of the award.

Veronica Kiernan celebrated 26 years of service as a healthcare assistant at Harefield Hospital. Veronica started her career as a runner in cardiac theatres before moving to the outpatients department in 2008.

She said: "I've changed roles over the years but what keeps me here is the familiarity and family atmosphere with my nursing, and healthcare assistant colleagues, and the admin team.

“So many patients come back every year and get to know us. They are always so grateful and feel very secure at Harefield which gives everyone a good feeling."

Sunday 27 July marks World Head and Neck Cancer Day.

Our head and neck cancer team has been involved in pioneering research, including studies into how Fusobacterium, a type of bacteria usually linked to the progression of bowel cancer, could support treatment for head and neck cancer. This work reflects their commitment to advancing care and improving outcomes for patients.

The team will be hosting an awareness stand at Guy's Cancer Centre on Thursday 31 July to share information about head and neck cancers and give away a selection of goodies, so please do join us.

🌻 Did you know you can pick up a sunflower lanyard at our hospitals?

Sunflower lanyards are available for anyone who may have a hidden disability and could benefit from a little extra support during their visit.

Wearing a sunflower lanyard is a discreet way to let staff know that you might need additional assistance. This could include help with communication, managing sensory sensitivities such as bright lights or loud noises, or simply needing a bit more time and understanding.

To find out where to pick one up, visit: www.guysandstthomas.nhs.uk/visiting-us/sunflower-lanyards

Strike action is taking place at our hospitals and community sites from 7am on Friday 25 July until 7am on Wednesday 30 July.

We'll contact you if your care or your child's care is affected. If you have an appointment at any of our hospitals or community sites on these days, please assume this is going ahead unless you have been told otherwise.

Our emergency department (A&E) at St Thomas' Hospital will remain open during the strike action to treat people who need emergency or urgent care. We expect it to be very busy.

If you need medical advice but it’s not an emergency, please use a different service to get the care you need. You could:

➡️ call NHS 111 or visit www.111.nhs.uk
➡️ make an appointment with your GP
➡️ go to a local pharmacist

We're sorry for any distress that delays to your care may cause.
