Huge congratulations to our recent graduates and colleagues for an outstanding presence at the Institute of Osteopathy Conference 2025!

We were proud to see such strong representation from the BCNO Group, showcasing the talent, curiosity and professionalism of our new generation of Osteopaths.

For many of our graduates, this was their first experience attending and presenting at an academic conference - and they rose to the occasion.

✨ Skyla Norman-Perkins – Exploring osteopathic students’ perceptions and utilisation of mental health support services: A mixed-methods study.
Selected for a Special Poster Presentation and awarded a Student Research Award, Skyla also delivered an inspiring 3-minute presentation of her work.

✨ Bob Cheung (Current Year 3) – Biopsychosocial & Neurological Model: Pre-clinical Students’ Application to a Hypothetical Lower Back Pain Case.

✨ Ellie Tapper – The quality and effectiveness of Pilates interventions in a population with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis: A structured literature review.

✨ Morgan Skinner – Exploring attitudes and beliefs of UK undergraduate osteopathic students about low back pain: A cross-sectional survey.

✨ Eriko Fuji – Pragmatic trials in osteopathy and manipulative therapies: a structured literature review of methods.

✨ Mia Hawkins – Exploring the knowledge of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) among osteopaths in the UK – a cross-sectional survey.

✨ Mads Smith – A qualitative study investigating the lived experiences of osteopaths trained and working in paediatrics.

We’re also proud of our academic contributors: Research Associate, Katerina Vafeiadou and Head of Research, Dr William Gowers, who delivered podium presentations on touch preferences in treatment and teaching settings.

To everyone who presented, attended and supported: we're proud of you and excited to see where your work leads next!

With UK temperatures soaring above 30°C today, it’s important to look after ourselves and those around us. Here are some key reminders to help you, your patients, friends and family stay safe in the heat:

✅ Apply sunscreen — Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and remember to reapply regularly, especially after swimming or sweating.
👒 Cover up — Wear loose-fitting, light clothing, wide-brimmed hats that shade your face, neck and ears, and sunglasses with UV protection.
🌳 Seek shade — Especially between 11am and 3pm when the sun’s rays are strongest.
💧 Stay hydrated — Drink plenty of water throughout the day
🤝 Check on others — Keep an eye on those more vulnerable to heat, such as older adults, young children, and people with chronic health conditions.

Let’s enjoy the sunshine safely! 🌞For more information, visit www.nhs.uk

🌟LONDON MARATHON🌟
On Sunday, students from BCOM and ESO supported the charity 'Versus Arthritis' with osteopathic first aid to help with post-run recovery.

The students all did a fantastic job, and runners and organisers were very grateful.  Many of the runners had arthritis themselves, both rheumatoid, ankylosing spondylitis and osteoarthritis of upper and lower limbs - two even ran the Marathon after a total hip replacement! It was hugely inspiring and humbling for us to support.

We also supported runners in an online pre-event given advice on warm up, cool down and how to deal with injuries.

thank you once again for inviting us to support such an amazing charity and event!

Our Story

The British College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM) www.bcom.ac.uk was founded in 1936 by Stanley Lief, the eminent naturopathic osteopath, and has developed into one of the largest osteopathic educational institutions in the UK . It is a statutory regulated and accredited training facility, educational charity and centre of excellence in Osteopathic education, regulated by the Osteopaths act of 1993 and accredited by the General Osteopathic Council. Since its formation BCOM has achieved an international reputation for the professional excellence of its teaching and qualifications.

Based in Hampstead, North London, BCOM was the first institution in the UK to offer an osteopathic honours degree and has achieved Recognised Qualification (RQ) status ‘approval without conditions’ by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) and Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), in the renewal of recognition review for quality in Higher Education for the past three consecutive reviews.

BCOM has been running its much-praised four year undergraduate Masters in Osteopathy (M.Ost) since 2008. The course integrates academic, scientific, anatomical, theoretical and research knowledge with applied clinical osteopathic and naturopathic skills, and is validated by the University of Plymouth. BCOM also offers a BSc (Hons) Osteopathy Conversion Degree for Diplomates, a 10-month post-basic training course that serves as an academic top-up to an osteopathic diploma. PgCerts are offered in Children’s Osteopathy, Osteopathic Sports Care and Human Nutrition.

BCOM has a strong research profile which helps inform teaching and learning throughout the curriculum. BCOM is involved in a number of areas of research, all of which link to osteopathy and naturopathy. Research Publications are frequently published in peer review journals, and conference proceedings. The International Conference on Advances in Osteopathic Research (ICAOR) was founded by BCOM in 1999. Since its launch ICAOR has become a global event hosting osteopaths in Australia, Brazil, Europe and the USA.
