Lack of data diversity is one of the big barriers to ensuring healthcare AI will work well for everyone. To tackle the problem, our AI research team led by Pearse Keane at Moorfields and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology is working on the world’s first healthcare AI foundation model with training data that is globally representative.

The initiative involves research groups in more than 65 countries, who will assemble one of the world’s largest and most ethnically diverse training datasets, containing 100 million eye images.

Hydroxychloroquine is widely prescribed to treat rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and other autoimmune conditions, but it has a potentially blinding side-effect that affects up to 7.5% of people who take it.

Researchers at Moorfields and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology have devised an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can detect and predict serious eye damage years before patients or doctors notice any symptoms or warning signs. The AI was developed through the Insight Health Data Research Hub at Moorfields, and in collaboration with UK and US institutions.
