🏥 A group of patients have been treated with new laser technology for vascular disease at King's.

The Interventional Radiology Team at King’s has been trialling innovative laser catheter technology. This non-surgical method uses laser energy to clear plaque from arteries, aiming to improve outcomes for patients whose condition has been resistant to other treatments.

Trudy Watkins, a patient, said, “It’s completely changed my life – I saw an immediate change to my mobility. I’m driving again and I feel like I can be a proper mum to my children now.”

🤰👶💙 Christina Axton, a Paediatric and Neonatal Clinical Nurse Specialist at King's, recently welcomed her beautiful twins, Oscar and Esmé, who arrived prematurely at 31+5 weeks.

In a deeply personal turn, they received care from the same dedicated team Christina is a part of. Having always supported families in a professional capacity, becoming a parent to premature twins gave her first-hand experience of the neonatal journey, and for , she shared her story:

🗨 “After a turbulent and complex pregnancy, our precious twins made an early arrival into the world on 15 September 2025 via c-section, over eight weeks early. They weighed 1.7kg and 1.6kg. Esmé and Oscar received neonatal intensive care from the highly specialised team of doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals at King’s.

“During this time, our lives were in limbo; it is difficult to articulate the emotions of leaving your newborn babies in a hospital night after night. But the neonatal team became our extended family and the unit became Esme and Oscar's first home. After 46 days on the neonatal unit, they were finally discharged home on 31 October. I can truly say that the highly specialist care and compassion from the team gave us as a family the best possible start despite their early arrival.

“Having twins on the neonatal unit is a rollercoaster. The neonatal team provided emotional support and guidance for us as parents whilst we tried to process and navigate Esmé and Oscar's early arrival. We are truly grateful for all the care we have received from the team at King's.

“World Prematurity Day is an opportunity to celebrate babies who make an early entrance into the world, sharing their unique journeys of hope and resilience, and highlighting the impact on and challenges faced by these families."

📸 Historic first event sees King's staff cross paths

Two members of , Lt Col Alex Saunders, Associate Director of Nursing for Education, Resuscitation, Simulation and Armed Forces, and James Deller, Head of Core Skills, proudly took to the streets of London on Saturday 8 November 2025, supporting the prestigious Lord Mayor’s Show.

The Lord Mayor’s Show is one of the oldest civic processions in the world, with a history stretching back over 800 years.

Alex has served as a marshal for around 14 years, helping to coordinate participants and ensure the smooth running of the three-mile procession through the heart of the City. Marshals are drawn from across the Armed Forces, including the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force, who work closely together to deliver this vast and intricate operation.

Alex, who is the Trust Armed Forces Lead, said: "Being part of the Lord Mayor’s Show as a marshal is an incredible honour. It’s a proud moment to represent our Armed Forces community on such a historic national stage.”

James took part in his role as Special Chief Officer with the Metropolitan Police Service, working closely with colleagues from the City of London Police to support public safety and manage the large crowds that gathered to enjoy the day.

🌹 Two-minute silence for

Today, we held services across our hospitals to mark .

The commemorations included readings, the laying of wreaths, and a two-minute silence, as King’s joined the nation in reflecting on the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces.

Services took place at St Luke’s Chapel at King’s College Hospital, Orpington Hospital and the chapel at Princess Royal University Hospital.

💬 Lieutenant Colonel Alex Saunders, Associate Director for Resuscitation and Armed Forces at King’s, said:

“At King’s College Hospital, I’m proud to work alongside colleagues in the Armed Forces Network and KFM, where our collaboration strengthens the sense of unity and shared purpose that defines both healthcare and military service.

“Remembrance holds particular significance for us; it is not just about pausing for a moment of silence, but about truly reflecting on the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those who came."

Thank you to everyone who joined us today.
