🌍 At King’s, we celebrate the diversity of our staff, and the strength that gives us to provide compassionate care to our patients.

💙 On (6 March 2026) we are proudly celebrating the value that our overseas workers bring to Team King’s.

Zeine Nehme, Paediatric Staff Nurse at King’s College Hospital, was born in Lebanon, and was inspired to come to the UK to build on her nursing experience.

She said: “Working in a large university hospital is challenging, but I love it. Building relationships with families who need our care, and helping to relieve a child’s pain with a simple thing like a toy or a sticker is the most rewarding thing I can do.”

Gian Carlo Alcantara, originally from the Philippines, arrived in the UK in 2017 and now works as a Clinical Nurse Educator in the Haematology-Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at King’s. He said: “Moving to the UK was a huge leap of faith for me. But what I found here was more than just a workplace, I found a community.

“Working in haematology is incredibly meaningful. Our patients go through some of the most complex and intensive treatments, and being part of that journey is a real privilege. Looking back, I’m proud of how far this journey has taken me and I’m grateful for the opportunities to grow, lead, and give back.”

Jonathan Danao, travelled to the UK from Australia in 2018, and is currently Paediatric Liver (Intestinal Transplant) Nurse Specialist at King’s. He said: “Over the past 20 years in nursing, I have learned that no two days are ever the same, and I am still learning every day. Our patients represent a highly complex cohort, and it is a privilege to support them and their families through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

“As an overseas nurse, I have also been involved in supporting both local and international recruitment, helping welcome new colleagues into the NHS and sharing the opportunities that a career in UK health can offer. On Overseas NHS Workers Day, I am proud to be part of a multicultural workforce that brings experience, compassion, and dedication from across the world to support children and families here in the UK.”

📚 To celebrate World Book Day this year, we teamed up with the charity Spread a Smile to welcome bestselling children’s author, Hannah Gold, to our paediatric wards.

Hannah read an excerpt from her World Book Day book, ‘Bear Rescue,’ to children and families, and chatted to staff about the power of storytelling.

“Books have always been a source of comfort, imagination and hope in my own life, and to be able to share that love, even in a small way, feels incredibly special,” Hannah said.

📢 We are delighted to announce the appointment of Matthew Trainer as our new Chief Executive.

Matthew’s appointment follows a competitive recruitment process and was approved – subject to pre-appointment clearances – by the Trust’s Council of Governors this morning.

Matthew is currently Chief Executive of Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, a position he has held since 2021.

Prior to this, he was Chief Executive of Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust for three years. He joined the team at Oxleas from King’s, having been Managing Director of the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) in Orpington.

Matthew will formally take up the role at King’s later this year, and his start date at the Trust will be confirmed in due course. Professor Clive Kay will remain Chief Executive of King’s until his retirement this summer.

Sir David Behan, Chair of the Trust, welcomed Matthew’s appointment:

“I am delighted that we have appointed Matthew to this vital role at the Trust. He has deep experience and a proven track record of delivery and improvement. Importantly, he also cares passionately about the NHS, supporting our staff, and delivering high quality care for the diverse communities that we serve.

“These attributes, together with his collaborative and inclusive leadership style, came across strongly during the recruitment process, and I am confident Matthew will be a superb addition to the Trust Board.”

Matthew said:

"It is a huge honour to be appointed Chief Executive of King's. I am delighted to be coming back to the place where I first worked in a hospital. King's is widely respected for its brilliant people and fantastic care, and I look forward to working with my new colleagues when I join the Trust later this year."

Sir David added:

“Clive Kay continues in his role as Chief Executive here at the Trust, ahead of his planned retirement later this year, and I would like to thank Clive again for the enormous contribution he has made during his time with the Trust. He cares deeply about King’s, and the work we continue to deliver.”

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has today published four inspection reports for services provided by the Trust.

All four services assessed – including maternity, medical care (including older people’s care) and services for children and young people at King’s College Hospital, and maternity at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) – are each rated as ‘Requires Improvement’ overall.

All four inspections were carried out during April and May 2025. The CQC found areas of good practice across all four services, and staff were praised for being kind, warm and compassionate.

However, the CQC identified a number of areas of concern, particularly in relation to leadership and culture in maternity services at both King’s College Hospital and the PRUH. The inspection team also found medical care (including older people’s care) and services for children and young people at King’s College Hospital below the standard people should expect.

Professor Clive Kay, Chief Executive, said:

“The CQC’s inspections show that, in many areas, our teams are providing high quality care, and this is clearly valued by patients, and people who use our services. Our clinical outcomes are also excellent, and this has been the case for many years.

“However, it is also clear from the reports published today that, in some areas, we are not meeting the high standards that patients rightly expect, nor giving staff the support they need to deliver the best possible services for the communities we serve.

“We have evidence that points to an improving culture within the organisation over the past 12 months, which is positive, but there is clearly more work to do, as we made clear to the CQC, and we will continue with our efforts to deliver improvements in this key area.”

📻 Keyoumars Ashkan MBE, Professor of Neurosurgery and Lead for Neuro-oncology at King’s, talked to BBC Radio Cambridge this afternoon about why he performs Deep Brain Stimulation with patients awake and playing instruments, and what those moments in the operating theatre reveal about the brain.

💬 Professor Keyoumars Ashkan said: “We are still on a quest to find a cure Parkinson’s disease, but Deep Brain Stimulation can lead to a fantastic improvement in quality of life. Of course, technology continues improving, and hopefully we can do more and more for these patients.”

The ranking highlighted our Green Plan to 2028, which sets out how we’ll reduce our environmental impact while continuing to deliver world-class care.

❤ Last Friday, we welcomed staff from ECHO Charity - Evelina Children's Heart Organisation to our paediatric cardiology service at Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH), where they had the chance to speak to staff, parents and young patients about how their support makes a difference to families.

💬 Dr Ola Elmasry, Consultant Paediatrician at PRUH, said: “The brilliant team at ECHO have provided us with a range of activities to help entertain the children we care for, including toys, an electronic tablet, and magazines. February is Heart Month, and so we felt it was perfect timing to open our doors to ECHO and show them how children and their families at PRUH have benefited through their generosity and kindness.”

🏳️‍🌈 Our last Rainbow Badge Pledge for 2026 is from Marianne, Occupational Therapist at King’s.

💬 She said: “By wearing a Rainbow Badge I am hoping to create a more comfortable and welcoming environment to patients and my colleagues. I know from my own experience that going to new places, especially healthcare settings can be a daunting experience, but if someone sees the badge it might help them feel more confident or might help them by simply putting a smile on their face.”
