In 1747, James Lind, a Scottish naval surgeon, conducted one of the first controlled clinical trials aboard HMS Salisbury.

His findings were simple but transformative: oranges and lemons could rapidly cure scurvy.

Today, we understand this as vitamin C deficiency, but at the time it marked a major step towards evidence-based medicine.

At the Society of Apothecaries, our History of Medicine course explores how discoveries, from ancient remedies to modern science, have shaped medical practice over time.
