Another troubling moment for democracy.

Yesterday, MPs voted to grant police sweeping new powers to restrict and shut down recurring protests - measures that risk silencing voices rather than protecting the public.

History shows that change rarely comes from a single moment; it’s the persistence of people coming together, again and again, that challenges authority and forces progress.

From civil rights to workers’ protections, it’s sustained protest that has held power to account and pushed society forward.

Limiting that right doesn’t just curb disruption - it undermines one of the most fundamental ways people can be heard. The ability to gather, to speak out, and to stand in solidarity is essential in any healthy democracy.

We shouldn’t take that lightly.
