Could treating hay fever earlier help protect against asthma later?

New evidence in allergy medicine suggests that early SLIT immunotherapy may do more than reduce symptoms — it may help change the long-term course of allergic disease in selected patients.

SLIT (sublingual immunotherapy) is a specialist allergy treatment designed to gradually train the immune system to tolerate allergens such as:
• Grass pollen
• Tree pollen
• House dust mites
• Animal dander

Recent studies suggest potential benefits may include:

* Reduced allergy symptoms
* Less reliance on antihistamines and nasal sprays
* Fewer asthma flare-ups
* Possible reduction in asthma progression in some patients

Early assessment is important, especially for persistent hay fever symptoms or allergic asthma.

A 2026 study of patients with difficult-to-treat chronic spontaneous urticaria found that over 90% had a co-existing psychiatric diagnosis — most commonly anxiety. More than half also had allergic rhinitis, adding sleep disruption, fatigue and daily strain on top of unpredictable skin symptoms.
