💜 We’re so proud of our amazing colleague Lynsey Aylward, who walked a full 26-mile marathon on Saturday night for Cancer Research UK.

The Shine Walk lit up London as thousands came together, walking past landmarks from Waterloo to Westminster. Lynsey took part “in memory of my brother, my mother-in-law, my sister-in-law, and close friends and family”.

🌟 Lynsey, your strength and dedication inspire us all. Thank you for raising awareness and support for such an important cause.

We’re excited to share the next feature in our ‘Meet the Team’ series - highlighting the incredible individuals whose skills, compassion, and dedication shape the care we provide at Icon Cancer Centre London.

We will be sharing the stories of our dedicated colleagues: what their role involves, what inspires them, and how they make a real difference to the patients and families we care for.

Last time, we introduced you to Alison Fitzpatrick. Today, we’re proud to shine the spotlight on Patient Administrator Charlotte Smith.

Charlotte has been a cornerstone of CCL for the past 20 years, bringing dedication and warmth to her role supporting the chemotherapy unit. As a Patient Administrator, she ensures the smooth running of daily operations - from answering patient queries and coordinating procedures, to preparing for upcoming clinics and maintaining essential documentation.

“Interacting with the patients on a daily basis is without doubt, the most enjoyable and rewarding part of the day,” she shares is her favourite part of her job.

Over the years, Charlotte has taken immense pride in being part of a team that consistently goes above and beyond. “We are a small, close team who know our patients well, and I feel proud of the difference we make to their patient journey.”

When she’s not at work, Charlotte is pursuing a meaningful new path: she’s currently undertaking a course in children’s bereavement counselling, with the hope of offering her support on a voluntary basis in the future.

Her compassion, commitment and community spirit make her a truly valued member of the Cancer Centre London family.

Today is World Radiotherapy Awareness Day – a chance to celebrate the people and technology at the heart of cancer care.

Radiotherapy plays a vital role in treating cancer, and behind every treatment is a skilled team working with compassion and precision. To mark the day, we would like you to meet one of our incredible Icon radiographers and CCL’s Lead Therapy Radiographer, Alison Fitzpatrick.

Every day, Alison supports patients through their treatment journey – from carefully planning and delivering radiotherapy, to offering reassurance and care at every step. She and her team’s expertise help ensure patients receive safe, effective treatment, while their kindness makes a difficult time a little easier. Join us in celebrating Alison and all radiotherapy professionals for the life-changing work they do.

With over 22 years at CCL, Alison brings compassion, precision and leadership to her role as Lead Therapy Radiographer.

She loves the balance of technical skill and patient care: “Every session is a chance to support someone during a vulnerable time - and every fraction of precision matters.”

As team leader, she’s proud of the close-knit group she works with. “We’ve been through a lot of change, but our commitment to delivering excellent care has never wavered.” She also values working in a setting where patients benefit from fully integrated cancer services under one roof.

What inspires her most are the patients themselves. “They arrive full of uncertainty. Being a steady, reassuring presence - and seeing how much that means to them - is why I do what I do.”

Outside of work, her superpower is caring - whether for patients, her team, or her family. She loves being outdoors, and admits her last bike ride turned into more of a comedy moment than an exercise session… “Let’s just say my husband now plays the Superman theme every time I walk through the door!”

Her warmth, skill and steady leadership make her a true cornerstone of the CCL team.

Radiotherapy is a cornerstone of exceptional cancer care, recommended for more than half of all cancer diagnoses worldwide. It has seen incredible advancements over the years, driving innovation and improving outcomes for countless patients and their families.

Yet, despite its impact, radiotherapy remains underutilised and often misunderstood. Together, we can change this.

On 7 September, we proudly support WRAD and stand behind the campaign One Voice for Radiotherapy https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61576766134971

🔧 Behind the scenes: building the future of cancer care at Icon Cancer Centre London (CCL)…

To prepare for the arrival of our brand new state-of-the-art Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator (LINAC), our teams, as well as a very skilled construction crew, are hard at work transforming our basement at CCL in Wimbledon.

A glimpse from over the past couple of weeks: we follow one of the massive conduits that has driven concrete all the way from the carpark deep down into the building, and we've witnessed the LINAC's base frame being installed.

This hive of activity represents months of precision planning, engineering, and teamwork – all aimed at one goal: bringing the best and latest world-class leading technology to treat our patients faster and more effectively than ever before.

Every cable, every concrete pour, every millimeter matters – we'll share more very soon 😄

Welcome back to our ‘Meet the Team’ series - where we introduce the inspiring individuals who go above and beyond to support our patients at Cancer Centre London. This is our way of saying thank you to the people whose roles often happen behind the scenes, but whose impact is always front and centre.

Last time, you heard from Louise Bowman. Today, we are excited to spotlight Lead Oncology Pharmacist & Deputy Head of Pharmacy Atia Aslam.

With over 22 years of dedicated service, Atia plays a pivotal role in the Oncology Pharmacy team at Cancer Centre London, ensuring each patient’s cancer treatment is safe, effective, and personalised.

Her day-to-day work is as complex as it is crucial. From screening systemic anticancer therapy (SACT) prescriptions and reviewing clinical data, to counselling patients about their medications and supporting last-minute treatment adjustments, she helps guide patients and clinical teams through each step with confidence and care. “No two days are ever the same,” she says. “We’re always adapting - for the patients and the evolving treatments we offer.”

She also leads on important behind-the-scenes work: developing protocols, writing clinical guidelines, and collaborating with consultants to support safe and evidence-based care. “It’s an exciting time in oncology pharmacy,” she explains. “With so many new, targeted therapies emerging, there’s always something new to learn - and better ways to help our patients.”

What makes her proudest, though, is the impact she sees every day. “When patients tell me they feel informed and empowered about their medications - that’s everything.” She recalls a moment when two different patients shared how much it meant to feel like “the most important person in the world” during their consultations. “That personalised care really matters.”

She also treasures the strong sense of community at CCL. “Some patients have been coming to us for 10, 15, even 20 years. This place becomes a second home - for them and for us.”

Outside of work, her calm and creative energy continues to flourish. You’ll often find her in the garden or capturing nature’s beauty through flower photography on her phone.

With her depth of knowledge, kindness, and unwavering commitment, Atia brings heart and precision to everything she does - and remains a cornerstone of the CCL team. Say hello to the latest feature in our ‘Meet the Team’ series - where we shine a light on the remarkable people who make Icon Cancer Centre London such a special place.

Through this series, we are proud to showcase the dedicated colleagues who go above and beyond every day - sharing a glimpse into their roles, what inspires them, and the difference they make to our patients and their families.

Last time, we introduced you to Julie Cottee. Today, we’re delighted to share the story of our amazing Senior Therapy Radiographer Louise Bowman.

With 15 years at CCL under her belt, Louise brings a wealth of experience and heart to her dual role in Radiotherapy Planning and Treatment.

She enjoys the variety her work offers - from the technical precision of planning to the meaningful, one-on-one moments with patients. “I love meeting and building relationships with patients, and supporting them through the radiotherapy part of their cancer journey,” she says.

For Louise, what makes her most proud is being part of a close-knit, highly skilled team that truly puts patients first. “Our small team works really well together to provide a kind, caring and exceptionally skilled service. Cancer Centre London is such a friendly place to work, with a really strong emphasis on patient-centred care.”

Beyond her clinical work, she finds fulfilment in mentoring others. “It’s always very touching when more junior team members come to me for guidance. It’s rewarding to know they value the knowledge I’ve gained over the years - and it’s lovely to be someone they feel they can turn to.”

Outside of work, Louise is in perfect harmony, quite literally. She sings tenor in a women’s barbershop chorus and also serves as the assistant musical director. “I’m quite good at waving my arms around in front of them in the hope that they come in when they should!” she jokes.

Her deep care for patients, her mentorship within the team, and her musical flair make her an invaluable part of the CCL family. Find out more about our team and the latest at Icon here: https://icongroup.global/en/. And for more about CCL visit https://iconcancercentre.co.uk/.

Welcome to our latest instalment of the ‘Meet the Team’ series - a celebration of the incredible individuals who bring compassion, expertise, and heart to every corner of Icon Cancer Centre London.

Each profile offers a window into the incredible people behind the care - their roles, their motivations, and their amazing achievements. Last week, we introduced you to Meghna Baby. Today, we are proud to shine a light on another valued team member, Chemotherapy Sister Julie Cottee.

For over two decades, Julie has been a cornerstone of the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Icon Cancer Centre London, leading the team with compassion, experience, and a remarkable ability to brighten even the most challenging of days.

As the manager of the Chemotherapy Day Unit and a hands-on chemotherapy nurse, her work is deeply patient-focused - and that’s exactly what she loves most. “I really enjoy being patient fronted and interacting with all our patients,” she says. “Hopefully, I’m making a difference to their experience with chemotherapy.”

It’s a role that requires both clinical expertise and emotional strength, and she couldn’t be prouder of the small but mighty team she leads. “The chemotherapy team is small, but we do such a fantastic job - and that’s mirrored in the feedback we get from patients. You know you're making a difference when they say their experience of having chemotherapy was better than they ever imagined… and that they actually look forward to seeing us.”

One such moment still stands out vividly, even after 21 years. “I had a new patient come in for a pre-chemotherapy consultation. She was so nervous and scared,” she recalls. “On the day of her first treatment, I remember making her laugh. Twenty years later, I saw her again in outpatients - and she still remembered that moment and how I made her feel. I’m so proud of the difference I made for her during that first experience.”

It’s that power of connection - of comfort, empathy, and care - that continues to inspire her each day. “To be able to make someone laugh and be happy… that’s a superpower in itself.”

Her sense of humour is her secret strength, and laughter is never in short supply around her. Whether it’s managing the fast-paced demands of the unit or simply sharing a light moment with a patient, she brings warmth, heart, and resilience to every shift.

Her dedication, positivity, and 21 years of unwavering service make Julie an inspiring and much-loved part of the CCL team. Find out more about our team and the latest at Icon here: https://icongroup.global/en/. And for more about CCL visit https://iconcancercentre.co.uk/.
