Welcome to our latest instalment of the ‘Meet the Team’ series - a celebration of the incredible individuals who bring compassion, expertise, and heart to every corner of Icon Cancer Centre London.
Each profile offers a window into the incredible people behind the care - their roles, their motivations, and their amazing achievements. Last week, we introduced you to Meghna Baby. Today, we are proud to shine a light on another valued team member, Chemotherapy Sister Julie Cottee.
For over two decades, Julie has been a cornerstone of the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Icon Cancer Centre London, leading the team with compassion, experience, and a remarkable ability to brighten even the most challenging of days.
As the manager of the Chemotherapy Day Unit and a hands-on chemotherapy nurse, her work is deeply patient-focused - and that’s exactly what she loves most. “I really enjoy being patient fronted and interacting with all our patients,” she says. “Hopefully, I’m making a difference to their experience with chemotherapy.”
It’s a role that requires both clinical expertise and emotional strength, and she couldn’t be prouder of the small but mighty team she leads. “The chemotherapy team is small, but we do such a fantastic job - and that’s mirrored in the feedback we get from patients. You know you're making a difference when they say their experience of having chemotherapy was better than they ever imagined… and that they actually look forward to seeing us.”
One such moment still stands out vividly, even after 21 years. “I had a new patient come in for a pre-chemotherapy consultation. She was so nervous and scared,” she recalls. “On the day of her first treatment, I remember making her laugh. Twenty years later, I saw her again in outpatients - and she still remembered that moment and how I made her feel. I’m so proud of the difference I made for her during that first experience.”
It’s that power of connection - of comfort, empathy, and care - that continues to inspire her each day. “To be able to make someone laugh and be happy… that’s a superpower in itself.”
Her sense of humour is her secret strength, and laughter is never in short supply around her. Whether it’s managing the fast-paced demands of the unit or simply sharing a light moment with a patient, she brings warmth, heart, and resilience to every shift.
Her dedication, positivity, and 21 years of unwavering service make Julie an inspiring and much-loved part of the CCL team. Find out more about our team and the latest at Icon here: https://icongroup.global/en/. And for more about CCL visit https://iconcancercentre.co.uk/.
