Usui Reiki - Take a bite
By Lara Al-Jabi

“Take a bite, you don't have to believe in Reiki for it to have a deep effect on you. You don't have to believe that fruit is delicious in order to enjoy it but you will have to take a bite first”

What is reiki? Reiki is a Japanese word meaning universal life energy. Reiki is the natural energy that surrounds and penetrates us and all other life forms. Universal energy is as essential to us as oxygen, water and food. Some people have higher energy flows and are sometimes said to have “green fingers”, soothe babies or called “natural healers”. Where does Reiki come from? Mikao Usui founded Reiki in 1922. It is said that after a long period of searching, Usui climbed the sacred Mount Kurama in Japan and meditated and fasted for 21 days. On the first day, he placed 21 stones in-front of him. For each day that passed, he threw a stone away. On the 21st day, a beam of light came shooting towards him from the heavens. This was his initiation into Reiki, the art and knowledge of healing. From then on the knowledge and ability of Reiki has flowed from master to student. In April 1922, Usui moved to Tokyo and founded the Usui Reiki Healing Society. He taught over 2000 students to use Reiki. Sixteen of his students continued their training to reach the master level. After Usui's death in 1926, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, a former student of Usui, left the Usui Reiki Healing Society and formed his own association. Hayashi simplified the Reiki teachings, stressing physical healing and a simpler set of Reiki techniques. Before WW2, Dr. Hayashi instructed a Japanese American lady called Takata from Hawaii. Takata then brought this wonderful gift to the western world. Almost all Reiki taught outside Japan can be attributed to her work. How does Reiki work? The Usui Reiki has 6 or 7 main levels or degrees. Generally, a few people come together and arrange Reiki one sessions with a Reiki Master or Teacher. The master with the permission and willingness of the student explains basic theories and procedures of Reiki. Four "attunements or initiations", which are around 5 minutes are given to the student by the teacher. The initiations open the Reiki channel allowing reiki to flow easily from the universal energy surrounding us through the student. The course duration is traditionally four sessions, most often given in 3, or 4 consecutive days. After completing the first degree course, the student can treat himself, other people, animals, plants and objects. Reiki influences on the physical, emotional and spiritual level. It can be sent to recipients with different ailments and diseases complementing traditional and alternative therapies. It can also help in times of birth and death by soothing and supporting. When sending reiki, no visualisation or use of will power, physical force or physic ability is necessary. The natural healing energy is drawn through the body, to the hands and then to the area they are touching. The energy flows according to what is needed to bring about health and well being. In the second degree Reiki course, the student learns the use of three symbols. Another attunement is given, which further increases the capacity for Reiki to flow through the student, as well as empowering the use of the symbols. After completing the second level, the student can send reiki at any distance, at any time and for any person or purpose. The student usually waits for a minimum of one year from the time of his/her Reiki Two initiation to attain the third degree. Through the third degree or Master degree one or more attunements are carried out and the student learns another symbol. After completing the master training, the new Reiki Master can attune other people to Reiki and teach the three degrees of Reiki. There are also other levels which are 4, 5 a and b and 6. It is said that there is also level 7 but very few individuals have recieved that. There are also other Reiki branches such as Rainbow, Kundalini and Karuna Reiki among many others. But it is thought that the Usui Reiki is the traditional and original Reiki teaching. Reiki is very simple, easy and requires no preconditions – just the willingness to receive. So take a bite of that Apple!
