Yoga is often perceived as aimed at developing flexibility. Although being supple is beneficial, it is equally important to develop strength which will support the existing flexibility. The Sanskrit terms 'Sthira' and 'Sukham' aptly describe the need to find a healthy balance between softness & firmness.

The main focus of the new 'Yoga for Strength' class is on developing strength in our yoga practice.

๐Ÿ’ช Strength in the legs & ankles ensures better stability, balance and confidence when walking and moving around. Knee issues often resolve when we strengthen the legs' muscles. The likelihood of suffering a fall sharply decreases once our foundations -feet & legs- are strong & steady. In yoga, standing poses, including balancing postures, are ideal for creating strength in the lower body.

๐Ÿ’ช A strong pelvic floor & core are vital to give support to our internal organs and to help us avoid common issues such as leakages and prolapse as we get older. A strong core will give support to the lower back and help us avoid back issues. In yoga we have specific practices like Mulabandha & Uddiyana Bandha which address these areas.

๐Ÿ’ช We lose muscle mass as we age and the upper body can become weak, especially in women.
Variations of plank and Dog help maintain a strong upper body, including strong wrists.

๐Ÿ’ช Strong back muscles are important as they protect the spine and improve our everyday posture by making it easier to sit and stand upright as our postural muscles become more efficient. The 'Yoga for Strength' class includes back bends which focus on developing strength, rather than flexibility.

๐Ÿ’ช The optional use of light weights will be made available, like 0.5kg wrists' & ankles' weights, as well as sandbags to increase resistance.

You'll be amazed at how easy and how much fun it is to develop your strength once you start practising regularly. If you already practise yoga, you'll see the benefits in your other yoga classes, too. This is because strength equals better stability and confidence in your yoga practice.

The hot summer days are here โ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜Ž and that means one thing for yoga students at The Haven.... there are less than 3 weeks left of yoga classes before The Haven shuts for the summer holidays.

There will be two 60-minute yoga classes, 'Yoga for strength', running on the last day. The classes are open to all levels of abilities, except complete beginners.

Who are the yoga students at The Haven?

Welcome to our fourth post in the series 'Meet the student - real people do yoga'.

Meet Bina, one of the regulars and a long-term student at The Haven.

When Bina first started practising at The Haven she suffered with debilitating back pain, which was also contributing to her poor mental health. Bina found the yoga classes helpful in managing her back pain and, over the years, increased her attendance at The Haven to 3โƒฃ weekly classes. As Bina got stronger and more supple, her back pain eased and her mental health improved. Today Bina is pain-free and the depression she used to suffer from is a thing of the past. Her commitment to her yoga practice is stronger than ever, having experienced first-hand the huge benefits that a regular and consistent yoga practice can bring.

As a postmenopausal woman, Bina knows that building strength ๐Ÿ’ช is vital and, for this reason, she uses weight bands on her ankles and wrists during her yoga practice. Menopausal and postmenopausal women are very welcome and are catered for at The Haven.

We are in the process of introducing 'Yoga for Strength' classes at The Haven, aimed specifically at menopausal and postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis is a real risk during the menopause years and beyond and by focusing on developing strength, rather than flexibility, we ensure that women stay strong and confident in their later years.

If you would like to give yoga a go don't hesitate! There are classes aimed at beginners if you're new to yoga or have had a break from practice. You'll be invited to come and try a one-off yoga class to see whether the yoga classes at The Haven are right for you.

Groups at The Haven are small, catering for a max of only 5โƒฃ students. The classes are friendly, supportive and are held in a fully equipped home ๐Ÿก yoga studio in the heart โ™ฅ of New Southgate.

โšก๏ธ beginners/gentle: ideal if you're new to yoga, have had a break from practice or are looking for a relaxing yoga class ๐Ÿ˜Œ

โšก๏ธmixed abilities: suitable for everyone regardless of experience or lack of it. Alternatives and modifications are offered to suit all levels of abilities

โšก๏ธ intermediate: vigorous yoga classes including Sun Salutations and flow sequences. Ideal if you have a regular yoga practice and enjoy a dynamic and challenging practice

Classes are limited to a max of only 5 students so that you are guaranteed that very important individual attention, coaching and encouragement ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿฟโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿฟโ€โ™€๏ธ

Pregnant ๐Ÿคฐ๐Ÿผ & postnatal mums are welcome. Classes are menopause-friendly.
