Spotting scoliosis in the summer ⛱️☀️

Summer holidays mean more time by the pool, on holiday and at the beach. Scoliosis is easier to spot in the summer months, as kids spend more time in swimsuits or lighter outfits.

And that’s often when parents first notice the visual signs of scoliosis.

Knowing what to look for can help you spot scoliosis earlier, leading to better outcomes and potentially avoiding surgery later on. Here's what to keep an eye out for 👇

👉 a visibly curved spine
👉 one shoulder higher than the other
👉 one hip appearing more prominent
👉 rib cage sticking out on one side (especially noticeable from the back)
👉 head not centred over the body
👉 difficulty standing up straight
👉 back pain
👉 a difference in leg length
👉 pain in the legs or pins and needles

If you think your child may have scoliosis, we offer free video assessments for scoliosis, with one of our specialist scoliosis clinician.

Diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis at 14 years old, Polly’s scoliosis curve started progressing rapidly.

Thanks to a same-day fitting of the LOC scoliosis brace and Polly's commitment to the wear schedule, Polly managed to avoid surgery and still maintain an active lifestyle.

“The whole process was seamless," says her mum Zoe. "Polly was measured in the morning and her bespoke brace fitted in the afternoon, quite a difference to the service offered by the NHS."

We had a fantastic time presenting our research at the Global Spine Congress 2025 last week in Rio.

It was an honour to share the stage with so many brilliant minds in spine care and to contribute our clinical research to this year’s programme.

Huge well done to Senior Orthotist Connor Mumford, who did an excellent job representing The London Orthotic Consultancy team and presenting the research led and developed by Clinical Lead Consultant Anna Courtney.

📌 The impact of over-corrective bracing in scoliosis treatment
📌 The role of physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercises in enhancing brace effectiveness
📌 Custom bracing solutions for multiple myeloma patients

A big thank you to Mr. Darren F. Lui and the team at St. George's Hospital, as well as our collaborators at Scoliosis SOS Clinic, for their invaluable support. Your contributions were essential in making this possible.

Looking forward to continuing these important conversations and pushing the spinal bracing field forward.

We’re heading to Rio! 🇧🇷

This time next week we’ll be presenting our clinical findings at the AO Spine Global Spine Congress (GSC) 2025 in Rio de Janeiro, one of the leading international gatherings of spine professionals.

Senior Orthotist Connor Mumford will be representing The London Orthotic Consultancy team with two presentations and a rapid-fire talk, based on abstracts we submitted that were accepted by the GSC scientific committee.

Here’s a quick look at what we’ll be sharing:

📄 Custom spinal bracing for multiple myeloma cancer patients – showing how rapidly-produced and bespoke 3D-scanned braces can reduce pain.

📄 Pushing the limits in bracing – exploring whether “over-correcting” the spine in-brace can lead to better long-term outcomes.

We’re looking forward to contributing to the conversation and connecting with fellow experts in spine care.

See you there!

Grace began her treatment with us at age 15, after being advised by surgeons to consider surgery. Given her age and Risser sign of 3/4, there was an 80% chance her curve would worsen before she stopped growing.

We prescribed the LOC Scoliosis Brace, combined with Schroth-based therapy, aimed to halt her curve progression and improve her posture without surgery.

Wearing her brace for 23 hours a day and following a tailored exercise regimen, Grace managed her treatment and visited The London Orthotic Consultancy for appointments - all while navigating secondary school and exams.

Her progress was monitored through in-brace and out-of-brace X-rays and by September this year, she had reduced her curve from 44 degrees to 24 degrees and was discharged with excellent posture — a testament to her dedication over the past three years.

Grace’s hard work has paid off, just in time for her to start her first term at university without needing her brace.

Congratulations, Grace 👏

Sofia, who is now 19, has now been out of her LOC scoliosis brace for over a year and there has been no regression in her curve.

Because she is now skeletally mature it means she should not require surgery in later life. We spoke to her and mum Elena about their experience of bracing treatment.

Sofia no longer needs surgery to correct her scoliosis following successful bracing treatment with the LOC scoliosis brace.

Scoliosis can affect people of any age, from babies to adults.

There are several different types of and symptoms can vary.

In around 8 in every 10 cases, the cause of scoliosis is unknown.
As we come to the end of this is a great reminder of what it's like to live with scoliosis. It can affect a person's appearance, self-esteem, and quality of life.

Let's show kindness and compassion to those with scoliosis, not just this month and every month.

Our Story

Welcome to our specific page for patients undergoing scoliosis treatment at the London Orthotic Consultancy (LOC).

Established in August 2004, the LOC was set up by by four clinicians who originally worked with the NHS in hospitals around London.

Scoliosis is defined as the abnormal twisting of the spine and can affect everyone from babies to adults though often becomes apparent during the growth spurt before puberty. Affecting around three to four in every 1,000 children in the UK, it is typically seen between the ages of 10 and 15.

At the London Orthotic Consultancy we treat scoliosis non-surgically with the Schroth method, which uses physiotherapy and if appropriate a brace, to normalise the postural alignment of the spine. Our scoliosis clinic is headed by clinician Deborah Turnbull, a BSc. CSP and HCPC registered physiotherapist, with over 10 years experience treating scoliosis with this method. In total we have three qualified Schroth method clinicians, trained in Germany by leading Schroth expert Dr Hans-Rudolf Weiss, and grandson of pioneer Katharina Schroth who developed the 3D scoliosis treatment according to Schroth in the 1920s.
