What's it like to study together on an integrated course at University of Liverpool?

At University of Liverpool, dental and dental therapy students study together in an integrated course.

We spoke to dental students, Sam, Libby and Aeesha, alongside dental therapy students, Lily and Millie, to understand how they find studying and working together to develop their skills and what challenges they face.

"When we are practising in the big world, we're all going to be working together collaboratively, so to get that exposure early is really good. "

"You see how much shared responsibility it is and how it's not just ‘a dentist’ and ‘a therapist’. You're closer together than I initially thought."

"A lot of dental therapists are perfectionists, but sometimes the gold standard isn’t achievable, and you should be happy when you have done the best you can for your patient."

The number of registered dental therapists increased by 23.5% last year, making them the fastest-growing group of dental professionals in the UK.

With more than 30 years’ combined experience in dental therapy, our new advisers, Rachael and Miranda, have done it all.

We asked them about their careers and what advice they have for dental therapists-to-be.

"Above all, have compassion for yourself as well as your patients.

"Of course, you need to be upfront about mistakes and reflect on your practice, but you also need to be kind to yourself."

No one wants to have to tell a patient that something has gone wrong, but honesty is the only way forward if we want to retain their trust.

Trying to cover things up or acting defensively would be a serious departure from professional standards. It could also lead to problems for your practice.

If something goes wrong:
🔹 Tell the patient and apologise
🔹 Offer an appropriate remedy or support to put matters right (if possible)
🔹 Explain fully the short and long-term effects of what has happened
🔹 Follow up with patients in writing, including details of further enquiries and outcomes.

The patient may be distressed, confused or even angry. Give them time to digest the information, ask questions and provide access to appropriate support.

Unsure what to do? Members can contact our advice line 24/7 for dento-legal support.
