After a long weekend, it’s important to make sure your team has properly switched off and had time to rest. That means no emails, no messages, unless it’s truly urgent.

Because health is more than just physical - it’s mental too.

Wellbeing isn’t just about time off, it’s about protecting that time.

As a manager, your role is to set the tone. Here’s how:

1️⃣ Respect boundaries: Avoid out-of-hours contact unless necessary.
2️⃣ Check in: See how your team is feeling, not just what they’re doing.
3️⃣ Lead by example: Take breaks and use your own leave.
4️⃣ Keep it human: Small, genuine moments build trust.
5️⃣ Make support visible: Signpost wellbeing resources clearly.

💡 Supporting mental health isn’t a tick-box exercise; it’s about creating a culture where people feel rested, respected, and supported.

Q1 Is Ending… But the Real Shift Starts in April

As we close out the first quarter, many businesses are focused on results, performance reviews, and planning for the months ahead.

But April isn’t just the start of a new quarter; it marks a significant shift in the employment landscape, as we begin to see the Employment Rights Act 2025 come into full effect.

Expectations around fairness, transparency, and accountability are no longer just best practice—they’re quickly becoming the standard.

While it’s easy to stay focused on day-to-day demands, moments like this are critical to step back and ask: is your business ready for this shift?

It’s important to ensure your HR systems are up to date, your policies reflect the latest changes, and your managers are confident and trained on what’s required of them.

The businesses that will thrive are the ones taking action now - reviewing, refining, and preparing before issues arise.

This past weekend, I took on and honestly, it was a great and motivating experience.

For those who aren’t familiar, is a mix of endurance and functional fitness that tests everything: strength, stamina, grit, and mental resilience. But doing it with my teammate? That’s what really elevates the whole experience.

Running side by side, pushing through each station together, and constantly checking in to keep each other motivated and focused.

And the key rule? Partners must start, run, and finish together. No one gets left behind.

What really stayed with me wasn’t just the physical challenge, it was the power of teamwork. The constant encouragement, the unspoken understanding when things got tough, and the shared accountability to keep going.

It reminded me how important the right environment is when building teams at work.

When people feel supported, motivated, and aligned, performance follows. Because strong teams aren’t just built on capability; they’re built on trust, communication, and the ability to lift each other when it matters most.

That’s what creates a culture where people don’t just show up… they push further, together.

HR crises don’t start as crises.
They start as small issues that go unmanaged.

Too often HR only becomes a focus when a problem escalates — a conflict, complaint, or risk that could have been prevented earlier.

Strong businesses take a proactive approach, putting clear systems, leadership capability, and expectations in place before problems arise.

Three questions every business leader should ask:
1️⃣ Are you waiting for problems before addressing HR?
Most costly HR issues begin as small concerns that could have been addressed earlier.

2️⃣ Do your leaders know how to manage themselves first?
Leadership starts with self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

3️⃣ Do you have systems that prevent issues?
Clear processes for recruitment, onboarding and performance management reduce risk and improve performance.

If this resonates and you’re looking to strengthen your HR foundations, feel free to reach out.

What should you have in place before you start recruiting?

It’s a question I’m asked regularly

Before you begin the hiring process make sure your job description is clearly defined
Including:

✅ Core responsibilities
✅ Essential criteria
✅ Desirable skills

This will support:
- A smoother interview process
- More consistency across interviews
- Easier assessment of candidates
- Clarity on whether they meet the needs of the role

A well-structured role profile also becomes the foundation for:
Performance objectives
Ongoing development
Success once someone joins

If you’d like support to get this right, I’d be happy to help 🤝

If I could give every business one piece of advice - it’s this:
✨ Documentation is key ✨

Keeping your HR documents up to date isn’t just admin - it protects your business and supports your people.

When you document employee progress, you can:

✔ Track goals clearly
✔ Spot performance strengths and gaps early
✔ Check everyone understands expectations
✔ Hold both you and your employees accountable
✔ Have evidence to support decisions when you need it

Even simple meeting notes make a massive difference.

I jumped on the theme and asked AI to “create a caricature of me and my job based on everything you know about me.”
The result couldn’t have been more timely - right as I celebrate my 50th birthday.

Looking at this image, I see more than just a fun illustration. It’s a mirror reflecting two core parts of my life. On one hand, it captures the dedicated HR professional; deep in meetings, ensuring compliance, and building strong workplace structures. On the other, it shows my love for running, an unplanned passion that has become a surprising and rewarding side hustle.

It got me thinking about a lesson I’ve learned over 20+ years in HR and in life: How you do one thing is how you do everything.

My journey from running 5ks to 10ks, half-marathons, marathons, and now ultra-marathons wasn’t an overnight leap. It was a process of small, incremental steps. Each run, each training session, was a paving stone. Looking back, I can see how the discipline I started with years ago built the foundation for where I am today.

It’s the exact same story with my business.

I started Eden Mayers HR Consulting 12 years ago with a one-year-old at home. The goal was to build a business that not only allowed me to master my craft but also gave me the flexibility to be present for my family, to do the school runs, make the Christmas plays, WITHOUT guilt.

This is the very philosophy I bring to my clients.

My mission is to help you build a thriving business by hiring the right people, for the right roles, and then giving them the autonomy to deliver excellence. It’s about creating a culture where your team is valued as whole people, trusted to perform without having to sacrifice the other parts of their lives.

Because when you build your business with resilience, one small, intentional step at a time, you’re not just paving the way for growth. You’re creating a sustainable foundation for excellence in everything you do.
