It's Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme for the week is loneliness and how to overcome it. I just love this video from my local community talking about how community gardens have helped them overcome loneliness or cope with mental health.

Gardens were very popular during lockdown for helping people cope. I know I started my own gardening and gardening focused project during that time. Gardening and gardens have helped me process a few deaths during lockdown and health issues too. My favourite part of connecting to nature has been seeing the Robins flit down to get some chunky worms!

Weight control - no I haven't suddenly lost my mind, I know many of you are interested in weight control so I brushed up my skills. I too am interested in HEALTHY weight control so I have now trained in gastric band and weight control hypnosis which I will tell you about another time.

What is your road map in therapy with me? It is a lot of what you see below. You see underneath the addiction, an eating disorder, low self esteem, weight loss, perfectionism, choosing the wrong partner etc is some or all of what you see below and more.

My job is to investigate with you the things that keep you stuck and give you the tool kit to help you finally stop going in circles. I help you step out of the circle and into your new life.

Life doesn't always prepare us well and therapy can help add back what you didn't get.

Mental Health Day 2020 - let's be kinder

To ourselves when we fall short of our expectations or goals.

When we find ourselves cut off from many of our outlets.

When our families and friends are out of reach and we are worried.

When we have lost jobs and don't know what comes next.

When we have anxieties about our capacities to be parents, lovers, wives, husband's or friends.

When we feel like we are just a child in an adults role.

When we aren't busy.

When we are taking the first steps out of depression or anxiety and it is hard.

When we live with a life limiting disease or disability.

When we believe we have somehow failed at life.

When we are overwhelmed and unkind.

When our behaviour falls short of our expectations.

Let us not push ourselves harder and faster.

Lets love ourselves. We are only human.

Let's love each other and make space for each other because we are human.

Quitting smoking a surprising anti-depressant

You are doing the best you can and you will quit when the time is right, by this most smokers mean calm. But smoking is associated with worse mental health and smoking maintains poor mental health.

Smoking is often used as a tool for avoidance, to reduce anxiety and boost moods. However, evidence shows that those who quit smoking can receive the same benefits as if they took an anti-depressant because depression and anxiety fall after quitting smoking.

I know you really want to quit but perhaps you are making excuses such as its already been a long time smoking and you have done so much damage already so why quit? The longer you smoke though, the more likely it is you will have that DNA mutation that leads to cancer.

SMOKING IS THE WORST CONTRACT OF YOUR LIFE

I really want to help detach you from smoking which is why I am sharing a FREE imagination exercise I usually only share with my clients. I call this exercise the worse contract of your life.

I am going to ask you to enter into a contract with me and you will pay me £75 a week. I won’t give you anything for this, in fact you will pay me and you will lose quite a bit of your life. Do you take this deal?

You will lose your health, you will lose your family, you will have your money set alight, you will lose your looks, you will lose time approximately 546 hours a year and you will be stressed each time you spend time with me. Do you take the deal?

You will eventually die from the contract we made that you originally thought was going to be fun and this will cause your family a lot of grief! Meanwhile, I am gaining riches. Do you take my deal?
