As we’ve gone through the year I’ve spoken to people doing all sorts of amazing things in the food system; but I really wanted to speak to a farmer. Boots on the ground, with a real-world view on our food.

There are some conversations that change how you see things, and this one really did that for me. Martin Caunce from said to me that all farmers are trying their best; they just don’t necessarily know another way to do things - that’s why these conversations are so important.

The more we learn different ways to get things done (in anything in life!) the easier it is to implement the things that resonate with us, and work in our own ecosystem (true for the soil, our families and our lives).

🐛Always on a mission to make soil sexy 🪱

Spent the weekend with talking all things soil and making simple dishes that showcase late summer produce. The soil is just like our gut - both have a microbiome, and if the bacteria are healthy and in balance, so is the environment around it.

On the menu was a garden zaatar on top of chickpeas, and a pear & dahlia pickle with eureka turmeric ACV 🫘🍶

A tomato extravaganza in the garden this week running their ‘Tickle Your Tastebuds’ sessions. Almost 100 people came to chat all things tomatoes, and learn how to create my super simple canapés and drinks.

Lots of tasters, laughs and tomatoes - on the menu a tomato & damson shrub with kombucha, an red bean & tomato hummus, and some mini tomato canapés with nasturtium & Mexican marigold.

I’ll be back next weekend in Yorkshire and then on the 12th October for both of the garden’s Plot to Plate festivals, speaking and running demos. Maybe see you there? 🍅

Tomorrow’s newsletter drop is all about HYDRATION.

Hydration is way more than water, and I hope you enjoy reading in the newsletter tomorrow about whether filters really are the way forwards, and how many electrolytes we actually need to keep us going on a hot day.

There’s also dates for my events over the next couple of months, which I would love to see you at.

Right now I’m in prep for some gorgeous events. Above is a variety of different types of mint and thyme from the for an event in October. Drying herbs is one of my favourite ways to preserve the season and enjoy the flavours of summer well past the last rays.

These are currently being dried - hung upside down till all the moisture is gone, then crumbled and sealed in glass jars to be mixed into different spice blends, or even used for teas.

You can do this with supermarket herbs too - particularly those that are in season now, when dried will pack way more punch in dishes than the ones bought pre-dried.

Newsletter is back this week with a cracking interview. - COO of .brewing sat down with me to talk about how they’re remapping the drinks world through a sustainable lens.

We talk about why beer can be a brilliant vehicle for activism, and how small actions can spark bigger change.

Another year of magical ideas and inspiration . Every year I can feel the community growing - and this year it was amazing to see old friends and meet people who I’d only met virtually before. I’ve written an article on The Life Larder this week about the lessons I’m taking with me from the field - link in the bio as always 🤍
