Both our homes came together for a sweet summer celebration with ice-cream parties for Residents and team members alike. At Nightingale House, we marked the re-opening of our beautifully refurbished Activities Hub with a gelato bicycle, while Hammerson House enjoyed classic treats from a traditional ice-cream van.

It was heartwarming to see everyone enjoying the sunshine, the space and of course, the scoops!

The Pears Communal Hall was magically transformed into a charming pop-up French bistro, offering Residents a truly unforgettable evening of friendship, flavour and flair. With fairy-lit walls, floral centrepieces and beautifully dressed tables, the atmosphere set the stage for an elegant night of fine dining and camaraderie.

Guests were treated to a mouthwatering French menu from savoury Mushroom Soup and indulgent Oven-Roasted Camembert to perfectly cooked Sea Bass and vegetarian Tarte Tatin. A delicate wine-poached pear dessert brought the feast to a sweet close.

Live entertainment from pianist and vocalist Sam Peterson filled the room with classic French melodies, creating a romantic, joy-filled ambiance. 🎶 Hosted by Alastair, our Head of Engagement, the evening ended with a heartfelt thank you from Resident Eric, bringing everyone to their feet in appreciation.

Huge thanks to our brilliant teams for crafting such a special event. 👏

Story boxes that spark memories - 5 simple items to include

Supporting someone with dementia doesn’t always require a detailed plan or structured routine.

Sometimes, the simplest ideas are the most meaningful.

A personal Story Box is a gentle activity you can create together.

It helps spark long-term memories and moments of connection through touch, scent and familiar objects.

Here are a few things you might include:

✨ A favourite perfume

🎄 A holiday decoration from years past

💍 A piece of jewellery linked to a special event

🌊 A small object from a beach or day out

📮 A postcard from a place they used to visit

It is not about perfection or finishing the box all at once. You can build it gradually.

It doesn’t even have to be a box, a small bag or pouch works just as well.

The idea is to go slowly, together. Let the objects prompt stories, emotions or simply a calm moment.

Even if someone is no longer speaking much, these items can offer comfort and reassurance through texture, scent and memory.

A Story Box is more than a collection of things. It becomes a way to connect, build trust and create meaningful moments in the present.

“I suppose you could say I’m a bit anti-social,” Valerie tells us with a smile. “I’m an only child and quite self-contained, so I’m perfectly happy in my room writing letters, reading or tending to my plants. But one of life’s greatest luxuries is breakfast in my room, on a tray by the window, looking out at the garden. I feel incredibly lucky to live here.”

Valerie was the second Resident to move into Hammerson House when it opened and she’s been part of our community ever since. She enjoys French, Scrabble, art and regular physiotherapy but it's the peace of mind and care that mean the most to her.

A remarkable life has brought Valerie here from evacuation during WWII, when a generous stranger took her and 19 other Jewish girls into his manor house to crossing the Atlantic alone at age 10 to live in Montreal during the war. “I adored it,” she says. “When I got back to London, I misbehaved, hoping my mother would send me back but she didn’t!”

Now, Valerie is happily settled; living life her way, with care, comfort and a beautiful view.

We were thrilled to welcome the renowned Israeli violinist and educator, Natalie Harris, to both Nightingale House and Hammerson House, Wohl Campus.

Natalie shared not just her extraordinary talent but her heart by weaving together classical masterpieces and beloved Jewish songs in a moving musical lecture that explored the depth and beauty of Israeli and Jewish identity.

Her visit was a poignant reminder that in uncertain times, music remains a powerful source of comfort, connection and hope. A passionate teacher at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, Natalie’s lifelong commitment to nurturing young musicians was deeply felt during her time with us especially when she met Nelly, one of the Academy’s founding members and a much-loved Nightingale House Resident.

As Natalie reflected, “It brings me absolute joy and tears to meet this lovely lady who has influenced so many young people. I hope to continue sharing my vision of music with future generations.”

It was an afternoon filled with warmth, memories and harmony; one that will stay with us for a long time to come.

Our Story

Nightingale House is a 200 bedded Jewish residential care home in South West London and Hammerson House, now closed for a major redevelopment, will be our 116 bedded home in North West London when it reopens in 2020/21.. Our Homes offer residential, nursing, dementia and respite care on a beautiful sites. We offer "care for life" and an exciting and diverse activities programme, together with a wide range of services and facilities including an in-house medical service, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy and more. Nightingale House is home to the first nursery on a care home site in the UK. Apples & Honey Nightingale. Both Homes have ambitious and extensive rebuilding and refurbishment programmes. The Charity receives no support from either central or local government in respect of any such capital projects. We are therefore largely dependent on the generosity of our friends in the community to fund capital works and also to help bridge the gap between monies received from local authorities and the true cost of running the Homes. The Charity is facing the ongoing challenge of caring for a client group who are increasingly frail and with very high care needs. Both Nightingale House and Hammerson House welcome residents from across the Jewish community, whether coming from London or further afield.
