🌱 Driving Environmental Sustainability in Care Homes 🌱
Residents, carers, nurses, relatives, social care leaders, researchers, council members and care association representatives came together to explore one vital question: how can we make care homes more environmentally sustainable?

Hosted at Nightingale Hammerson in partnership with the Green Economics Institute, this collaborative event triggered discussions around the environmental challenges facing care homes today. More importantly, it helped identify clear, actionable steps that can create a more sustainable future for care delivery.

Stay tuned for a series of upcoming publications that will share insights and outcomes from the event.

A special thank you to the NIHR Research Delivery Network and Care Home Life for sponsoring the event, and to Care England for their ongoing support.

🌍 A more environmentally sustainable social care sector is within reach and we all have a role to play in making it happen.

When people talk about care, the conversation often turns to systems such as funding, workforce pressures, regulation or capacity. These things matter deeply but they can also risk losing sight of what care really is because care doesn’t begin with a care plan.

It begins with noticing.
Noticing that someone now prefers their tea a little weaker.
That a familiar song from years gone by brings a smile to their face.
That sometimes, a quiet moment is more comforting than questions being asked.

At Nightingale Hammerson, we’re reminded every day that care isn’t something you do to someone, it’s something you build with them.

In a world that moves fast, care asks us to slow down. To listen properly. To value presence over process and experience over efficiency. It can feel at odds with targets and timesheets but it’s in this space that dignity truly lives.

Too often, older people are spoken about in the abstract as numbers, pressures or problems to be solved. Yet every person in our community carries a lifetime of stories, humour, resilience, contribution and love. Ageing isn’t a loss of identity but rather a continuation of it. Good care recognises that.

Well-being isn’t only about physical safety. It’s about emotional security. About feeling known. About maintaining choice and autonomy, even as support needs change.

Care is also reciprocal. Anyone who works in care knows this. While they give patience, skill and compassion, they also receive connection, perspective and meaning in return.

As conversations about the future of social care grow louder, we believe this truth must remain at the centre. Care isn’t just an outcome to be funded, it’s a relationship to be nurtured.

If we design systems that put humanity alongside sustainability, value carers as both skilled professionals and emotional anchors and listen to older people as experts in their own lives, we don’t just improve care. We strengthen society.

How we care for people as they age says something powerful about who we are and who we choose to be.

Last week we hosted our annual bridge event at Hammerson House with Andrew Robson OBE. 105 keen bridge players came together in support of Nightingale Hammerson, picking up expert tips and tricks while enjoying a day of friendly competition. The event featured lively bridge games, a fantastic lunch (with a welcome appearance from the sunshine) and an exciting raffle with some highly sought-after prizes.

We were blown away not only by the turnout but also by the generosity of our guests, who helped raise an incredible £12,000. This will go directly towards supporting the outstanding care we provide for our Residents.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us, to our event sponsors the Rosalyn & Nicholas Springer Charitable Trust, whose kindness and generosity helped make the day such a success and to organiser Evy Levene for her hard work and dedication in bringing the event together.

Can you simply crush and mix medication into the yogurt of someone living with dementia?

Covert medication remains a common practice, both at home and in residential care settings but it raises important legal, ethical and safety considerations.

In this video, Nicola Perkins, Pharmacy Technician at Nightingale Hammerson, explores:
• What “covert administration” really means
• The requirements under the Mental Capacity Act
• How to reduce the need for covert medication
• How capacity assessments work
• Who must be involved in best interest decisions
• Safe approaches to covert administration.
• Key risks, common mistakes, and when to seek help.

This is essential viewing for healthcare professionals, caregivers and anyone supporting individuals who may lack capacity.

We’re proud to announce that Nightingale Hammerson is sponsoring the Palliative and End-of-Life Care Awards this year.

Reflecting on last year, we were honoured to be recognised among such inspiring peers. Our Fundraising & Marketing Team was Highly Commended for the Best Influencer and Campaigner Award. Our Bereavement Support Team was Highly Commended for the Support for Family Carers Award and we were delighted to be named Palliative Residential Care Provider of the Year.

These achievements mean so much to us, as they reflect the compassion, dedication and expertise our teams bring to supporting Residents and their families every day.

As our Chief Executive, Jennifer Pattinson, shares: “In palliative care, we only have one chance to get it right, both for the person approaching the end of life and for those around them.”

We are also proud that our Chief Executive, Jenny, will be there on the evening to present the Palliative Residential Care Provider Award to this year’s winners.

We wish the very best of luck to everyone entering this year’s awards and look forward to celebrating the incredible work happening across the sector.

We so enjoyed Nightingale House being used as the film location last summer! It was wonderful to see some of our team members and Residents making a special appearance in the film too. The crew were an absolute delight to work with, such a fantastic experience for everyone involved. We thoroughly recommend everyone booking tickets to see it!

After seven remarkable years at Nightingale Hammerson, we will soon be saying farewell to Nuno Santos Lopes.

During his time with us, Nuno has held several key leadership roles including Care Quality Lead, Director of Care and most recently Director of Research, Innovation and Community Engagement. In each position, he demonstrated exceptional dedication to improving the lives of older people and strengthening the future of social care.

Nuno played a pivotal role in establishing and developing our Reach by Nightingale Hammerson brand, which now provides more than 100 accessible resources supporting families, professionals and the wider community with trusted health and care information. His leadership was also instrumental during the pandemic, where he navigated unprecedented challenges with determination and compassion, always placing the well-being of our Residents first.

He also helped oversee the opening of Hammerson House and contributed significantly to develop social care research and to the innovative models of care that define Nightingale Hammerson today. Nuno’s impact on our charity, our Residents and our teams has been profound and his legacy will continue to shape our work for years to come.

Nuno said: “My time at Nightingale Hammerson has been incredibly special. Working alongside such passionate team members and supporting our Residents and their families has been a true privilege. Nightingale Hammerson will always have a very special place in my heart. I have loved every moment of this journey and look forward to keeping in touch and watching the organisation continue to grow and inspire."

Jennifer Pattinson said: “It has been a real pleasure to work so closely with Nuno over the years. I want to thank him for his dedication, leadership and for constantly pushing us to promote the incredible work we do on a worldwide scale. Nuno has made an extraordinary contribution to Nightingale Hammerson and we are deeply grateful for everything he has achieved."

While we will miss him greatly, we are incredibly grateful for everything he has contributed and wish him every success and happiness in this next chapter.

Thank you, Nuno.

As part of Nutrition & Hydration Week, the Activity Hub at Nightingale House turned into a culinary competition with our very own MasterChef Challenge 👨‍🍳

Each household received a mystery box of fruit along with three surprise ingredients then worked together to dream up their dish. With just 90 minutes on the clock, Residents and team members collaborated to bring their ideas to life before presenting their creations for judging.

From smoothies and fruit infusions to dipping sauces and even hedgehog-shaped fruit sculptures, the creativity on display was incredible!

Huge congratulations to Ronson Household for taking the win and a big well done to everyone involved for their imagination, teamwork and energy 🏆

Our Story

Nightingale House is a 200 bedded Jewish residential care home in South West London and Hammerson House, now closed for a major redevelopment, will be our 116 bedded home in North West London when it reopens in 2020/21.. Our Homes offer residential, nursing, dementia and respite care on a beautiful sites. We offer "care for life" and an exciting and diverse activities programme, together with a wide range of services and facilities including an in-house medical service, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy and more. Nightingale House is home to the first nursery on a care home site in the UK. Apples & Honey Nightingale. Both Homes have ambitious and extensive rebuilding and refurbishment programmes. The Charity receives no support from either central or local government in respect of any such capital projects. We are therefore largely dependent on the generosity of our friends in the community to fund capital works and also to help bridge the gap between monies received from local authorities and the true cost of running the Homes. The Charity is facing the ongoing challenge of caring for a client group who are increasingly frail and with very high care needs. Both Nightingale House and Hammerson House welcome residents from across the Jewish community, whether coming from London or further afield.
