The Kidney Fund

The Kidney Fund The South West Thames Kidney Fund supports research into kidney disease at the SWT Institute for Renal Research at St Helier Hospital, London.

The South West Thames Kidney Fund is a charity which supports research into important aspects of kidney disease, in particular its links with diabetes, with the objective of improving diagnosis, prognoses and palliative care for patients but, most importantly, ultimately finding cures. Although the administrative offices are within the Institute for Renal Research at St Helier Hospital, London, t

he objectives of the Kidney Fund have no geographical boundaries, with prospective benefits not only nationally but worldwide. The Kidney Fund is the brainchild of Dr Mike Bending, a former renal consultant, who, with massive support from patients and their family and frends, as well as fellow medical staff, raised sufficient funds by 1998 to open purpose -built research premises for the South West Thames Institute for Renal Research (SWTIRR), the only independent dedicated renal research institute in Britain. Now semi-retired, Dr Bending continues as Chairman of the Kidney Fund, with an Executive Committee consisting of patients, their relatives, doctors and other interested people. However, of most importance are the multitude of supporters that have enabled the Kidney Fund to raise such substantial sums. With very low administrative costs, nearly all the money raised goes towards research. In the last 5 financial years, £1.3 million has gone towards the research. Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, the Kidney Fund is able to provide the majority of the financial support required to keep the SWTIRR operating successfully. The SWTIRR itself is a Company Limited by Guarantee whose governance is closely monitored by the Kidney Fund which has a Quinquennial Review Panel to examine the governance of the charity, the results of the Institute, its management and projected research. So that promising results with the prospect of commercial advantage might enable funds to be raised for future research, the SWTIRR has established Helier Scientific Ltd as its trading arm. The Kidney Fund is a member of the AMRC (Association of Medical Research Charities). In 2011 it awarded its 6th Clinical Research Fellowship.

Ten years ago I was told that my kidneys had failed, and I started dialysis three times a week in order just to stay alive. It has been a very difficult time living with a chronic condition since then, dealing the challenges to both my physical health and my mental health. I’ve recently become a Life Coach and I’m available to help others who are struggling with a chronic condition.

A life coach who also has a chronic illness can provide unique insight, understanding, and empathy to someone facing a similar condition. Here are a few ways in which a life coach with a chronic illness can be of help:

1. Shared Experience: A life coach who has personal experience with a chronic illness can relate to the challenges, frustrations, and emotions that come with living with such a condition. They can offer support and understanding from a place of firsthand knowledge, making it easier for the individual to open up and discuss their concerns.

2. Practical Strategies: A life coach with a chronic illness can share practical strategies and techniques they have personally used to manage their condition. They can provide guidance on self-care practices, pain management strategies, energy conservation techniques, and other practical tips that have worked for them. This can be invaluable in helping the individual develop a personalized plan for managing their own chronic illness.

3. Emotional Support: Living with a chronic illness can often bring about a range of emotions, including frustration, anxiety, and sadness. A life coach who has experienced these emotions firsthand can provide a safe space for the individual to express their feelings without judgment. They can offer emotional support, validation, and encouragement, helping the individual navigate the emotional challenges that come with their condition.

4. Advocacy and Resources: A life coach with a chronic illness can guide the individual in becoming their own advocate. They can provide information on available resources, support groups, and healthcare options specific to their condition. They can also help the individual navigate the healthcare system, communicate effectively with medical professionals, and access the necessary support and services.

5. Role Model: A life coach who has successfully navigated their own chronic illness can serve as a role model for the individual. Seeing someone who has thrived despite their condition can instill hope and motivation. The life coach can share their personal journey, including the obstacles they faced and the strategies they used to overcome them, inspiring the individual to persevere and find their own path to well-being.

In summary, a life coach with a chronic illness can bring a unique perspective and understanding to their coaching practice. Their shared experience, practical strategies, emotional support, advocacy, and role modeling can be immensely beneficial to someone facing a similar chronic condition. If you are seeking support in managing your chronic illness, consider working with a life coach who can provide guidance and empower you on your journey to living a fulfilling life despite your condition.

Hi, I’m Nick and I have been a Trustee of the Kidney Fund for the past 8 years, while at the same time I have been a dialysis patient under the care of St Helier Hospital. I am starting my own Life Coaching business and I am looking to take on new clients!

I can be your authentic guide on the journey to self-discovery and personal growth. My diverse background in psychology, chronic illness management, mental health, and spirituality has equipped me with a unique set of skills and insights.

My warm and empathetic nature instantly puts clients at ease, creating a safe space for open conversations and personal exploration. I understand that life can throw unexpected challenges our way, and I believe that each obstacle presents an opportunity for growth and transformation.

Having personally experienced the ups and downs of living with a chronic illness, I bring a deep understanding of the physical, emotional, and spiritual toll it can take. My own journey has taught me resilience, acceptance, and the power of finding joy amidst adversity.

I believe in fostering a safe and nurturing space, where you can openly explore your aspirations, challenges, and dreams. With me, you can benefit from a wide range of techniques and strategies to help you overcome obstacles, identify limiting beliefs, and develop effective action plans. Whether it's through visualization exercises, goal setting, or mindfulness practices, I will empower you with practical tools to create lasting positive change in your life.

With me as your life coach, you can expect a genuine connection, unwavering support, and a wealth of knowledge to guide you through life's challenges. Together, we will embark on a transformative journey towards self-discovery, personal growth, and ultimately, a more fulfilling life.
