How to anti-age your neck!

Eyelids aside, the skin on your neck is thinner than anywhere else on the body and often one of the first areas to show slackening and signs of ageing, such as wrinkling or jowliness.

As there are many different factors that may have caused these changes (be it fat loss, sun damage, a lack of hydration - the list goes on!) the best way to reverse the signs of ageing will vary from patient to patient.

SPF 101 ☀️

SPF is the single most important part of anyone’s skincare routine - prevention of sun damage is much easier than cure.

The Facts:

The significant link between UV exposure and skin cancers and skin ageing generally has been consistently shown throughout the medical literature, as well as the vital role of sunscreens in prevention.

UV exposure is strongly linked to the development of skin cancers and all attributes of ageing including collagen/elastin loss, pigmentation and volume change.

The key things to note are the differences between UVA and UVB - particularly the fact that we all should be aware that UVA causes a lot of silent damage to the skin - it accounts for 95% of UV rays, is present year round (even in the winter) and penetrates really deeply into the skin, causing DNA damage, volume change and collagen damage.

Sunscreen should therefore be used daily (at all times of year). You should select a broad spectrum screen.

The amount used depends on the type - for inorganic sunscreens, two tablespoons for the face is a suggested guide, for organic screens it may be slightly less that is required.

So please don’t rely solely on a few drops of sunscreen added to a moisturiser to provide enough cover - blending products may reduce efficacy.

While many of us are meticulous about our facial skincare routine, when it comes to our ‘skin below the chin’ (chest, shoulders and hands) that are also often exposed, we are less discerning.
