Helping exhausted and busy women get more energy and get more done About me

After a long fertility journey and a thyroid diagnosis I became frustrated with conventional forms of medicine and looked for a different approach that would get me feeling good again. Through personal

research and then through studying to become a nutritional therapist I found that it was nutrition and lifestyle medicine that gave me the answers and the results I'd been after. And I'm passionate about making life easier and healthier for busy women. I have a thyroid health Facebook group (Get more energy | thyroid support for tired women) and I've appeared in the Guardian, the Telegraph and Stylist magazine. I can mostly be found at weekends snuggling on the sofa with my 7 and 4 year olds. Qualifications

I studied at the College of Naturopathic Medicine in London for my diploma in Naturopathic Nutrition. I am a member of BANT (British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine) and of the ANP (Association of Naturopathic Practitioners) and am registered as a nutritional therapist with the UK regulator of complementary health practitioners, CNHC (Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council).

Your life might be shrinking

In spite of having busy lives, and still functioning (probably very well to most onlookers), I speak to many ladies who say that since they’ve been hypothyroid, they sometimes feel they aren’t the person they used to be

Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s can slowly make its mark

It can affect motivation, get up and go, focus..

And if you’re still managing to get it all done, it can just make everything that little bit more effort.

The thing is, the very fact that you are managing, that you’re pushing on through and keeping going, could be scuppering your chances of feeling better

You’re using fuel that isn’t there

No wonder you feel depleted

Your body can’t function long term in a depleted state and it is likely to slow your metabolism further

If you’re running on empty and wondering why, I’ve put together a webinar that explains this all clearly and what you can do about it

Comment FUEL and I’ll send it to you ⛽️

Your metabolism is already likely to be slower

And then you restrict your calorie intake because you want to lose weight

But studies indicate reducing calories consistently can lower resting metabolic rate by 10%–25% or more, particularly with severe restriction, as the body aims to preserve energy

Your body is trying to look after you but it’s slowing things even more

So how on earth do we lose weight with hypothyroidism?

We need to give to the body first

We need to make sure it has all the fuel it needs

And then we can reduce calories

Not drastically

And not without keeping close tabs on energy

It’s a careful balance ⚖️

But it is possible

Comment ‘balance’ if you’re struggling with hypothyroid weight and you’re ready to commit to changes that will help you lose it

You can resist it all you like but your body is sending you a message to slow down.

If it feels like you’re already going too slow, something needs to shift.

You need to look at it another way.

How can you nourish your body?
How can you give it what it needs?
What its been craving?

When you make this shift, instead of demanding more from it when it’s already depleted, you’ll be providing the fuel it needs in order to give you back its energy.

Comment ‘energy’ below if you’re low in energy and need the next steps.

Is Hashimoto’s at the root of your thyroid symptoms?

Maybe you’re not diagnosed hypothyroid, maybe you are. You can still have Hashimoto’s and it may well be the reason that you still feel bad even though you’ve been told your thyroid markers are ‘normal’.

Find out more about this condition and what you can do about it with the free online summit from 6th to 12th April.

Explore new perspectives, expert insights, and practical tools with over 20 contributors from the health and wellness space.

The body needs to be nourished and it needs to have fuel.

You can’t expect it to function properly and for you to feel energised if you are not putting filling up with petrol [gas].

So the first thing I’d do is to eat regularly.

This means having breakfast, lunch and dinner at regular intervals and repeating this each day.

Depending on your tiredness level and your exercise and energy expenditure, you may also need snacks.

But don’t eat more often than every 2 hours.

Is there a voice inside your head, chastising you?

This isn’t the way to adopt healthy habits, feeling guilty or naughty and like you’re being told off.

There’s a way to do it that highlights the reasons, and explains what’s happening inside, so you gradually find yourself never wanting to stray far from what you know your body loves.

Move away from the perfectionism and the rules and towards an intelligent, logical and instinctive care for your thyroid health 💚

Here are the answers! 🤩

Should I see an endocrinologist?
Maybe but they are likely to give you the same answers as your GP
Are these menopause symptoms or thyroid?
Probably both. Hot flushes are typically menopause. Low energy is typically thyroid.
Can I eat broccoli?
Yes. It’s great for you. Just don’t eat lots of it raw.
Is dairy ok?
Maybe not. If you have symptoms, skip it.
Do I need more iodine?
Possibly but probably not. Be careful with iodine.
Is my cortisol too high?
Probably, at times.
Is my oestrogen too low?
Maybe if you’re peri or menopausal.
Is this all inflammation?
That will be involved, yes.
Do I have an autoimmune disease?
Quite likely if you have hypothyroidism - Hashimoto’s.
Will I get another?
Your risk is higher once you have one. Unless you make food and lifestyle changes to reduce that risk.
Is this supplement going to be the one?
No. Supplements work well in tandem with other changes. There’s no such thing as a miracle supplement.

Maybe that will help with the overwhelm?

I speak to so many ladies who are doing bits and bobs

They may be taking a supplement that promises to end their fatigue

They may be cutting out a food that they’ve heard could be a problem

They may be quitting coffee or getting into Crossfit

But they are still speaking to me

Meaning, they still need help

So often they talk about feeling confused and overwhelmed

I’m not going to tell you everything you need to know about how you can get your energy and your life back now.

Because it’s an instagram post. And because it’s not the same for everyone. And oh yeah, this is my job.

But I will give you some pointers to get started.

➡️ Go anti-inflammatory. Reduce the load. You can do this by increasing anti-inflammatory foods - oily fish, leafy greens, berries
➡️ Help yourself detoxify. Hypothyroidies are often very inefficient at this. This means keeping hydrated, putting an end to constipation and loving your liver
➡️ Put sleep first. Do all you can to get good quality and a good quantity of restful hours
