🔥 Fix the Fire

There’s been so much noise lately about the benefits of new medications.
Of course, they have their place — some are life-changing, even life-saving.
But it worries me how quickly we’ve begun to treat them as the answer.

💊 1 in 2 Americans, Britons, and Australians now take at least one prescription drug.

Let’s look at how many people you have to treat for just one person to truly benefit:

• SSRIs: 1 in 8 improve beyond placebo
• Statins: 1 in 104 prevent a heart attack over 5 years
• GLP-1s: 1 in 3 lose significant weight (including lean mass) — and most regain it when they stop
• NSAIDs: 1 in 4 get meaningful relief — but risk ulcers and gut damage
• Levothyroxine: 1 in 10 — the most prescribed drug in the UK, yet so many still struggle and need higher doses over time

Most drugs never get to — or fix — the root of the problem.

If inflammation alone were the issue, NSAIDs and steroids would cure disease.
If weight gain were just calories, GLP-1s would solve obesity.
If thyroid health were just hormones, levothyroxine would fix it.
If making a baby were just egg + s***m, IVF would work every time.

The only way to truly help the whole body is to look at the whole body.

You have to find what’s fuelling the fire,
understand how to contain it,
and then help the body put it out — for good.

That’s what functional medicine and epigenetics are about:
understanding the root cause, changing the environment,
and supporting the body to work with itself, not against it.

✨ This is fixable.
Not by fighting your body
but by finally working with it.

🧬 Research led. Clinically grounded. Whole body healing.

The last two weeks I decided to completely cut out oat milk and switch to soy.

I’d been waking up with aching feet, swollen hands, and even some inflammation around my nails (paronychia), the kind of low grade inflammation where you know something’s off but you can’t put your finger on it.

After a bit of observation, I realised I often felt worse after my morning oat latte. I suspect it’s mostly due to the barista oat milk: the higher GI/glucose spike, added oils/emulsifiers, and possible gluten cross contamination, but whatever the reason, since taking a break from oat milk, I’ve felt so much better.

Functional medicine reminds us that these subtle body clues: sore joints, swelling, fatigue, or even changes in our nails can often appear before anything “clinical” does. They’re how your body asks for less chaos and more balance.

It doesn’t mean oat milk is “bad” for everyone, but it’s a great example of how even so called healthy foods can trigger different responses depending on your gut health, blood sugar balance, or immune sensitivity.

☕️ Sometimes the smallest tweaks make the biggest difference and tuning in early and not putting up with things, can be key.

✈️ My Top 3 Travel Health Essentials (and 3 to Avoid) for all those jet setters

Travelling exposes us to new bacteria, disrupted sleep, and unfamiliar foods, all of which can challenge the gut, immunity, and skin. Here’s what I always travel with 👇

🌿 3 Things I Always Take

1️⃣ A clinically proven probiotic, shown to protect the gut, reduce infection risk, and even improve skin clarity. Travel exposes us to new microbes, so protecting the gut–skin–immune axis is key.

2️⃣ I don’t stop my core supplements
Even short gaps can lower resilience under stress.

3️⃣ Vitamin C at the first sign of illness
If I start to feel off, I take vitamin c every few hours for the first 24 hours.

🚫 3 Things I Avoid

1️⃣ Tap water
Your microbiome can react to unfamiliar water and needs to adapt. Filtered helps your system adjust gradually.

2️⃣ Going straight for the comfort food
When tired or jet-lagged, it’s tempting to reach for sugar and carbs. But they spike cortisol, crash blood sugar and slow recovery. I ease in with protein rich whole foods and nice cup of tea and stay hydrated.

3️⃣ Pushing through jet lag
Sleep disruption suppresses immunity for up to 72 hours. I hydrate, exercise, prioritise daylight exposure ( especially dawn and dusk) but most importantly get to bed early if I’m struggling.

When we left London and moved into our very first home in Wales our kind neighbours gave us a plaque with the word cwtch. In Welsh it means hug, but really it means so much more: safety, belonging, the warmth of being held by someone you love. That plaque has travelled with us through medical school, puppies, babies, moving homes and building Cura Body.

Now, a new plaque marks a new chapter. This time, it’s Australia. 🌏✨🦘

For our boys, it’s wide skies and new adventures. For me, it’s the privilege of continuing Cura Body while stepping into exciting new opportunities with a Functional Medicine clinic in Australia and still supporting my clients along the way.

For us this is where the adventure begins again.

One plaque for where we started.
One plaque for where we’re going.
Both reminders that for our family, health, connections, and a sprinkle of daring to dream and try new things are what truly make us happy 💛

We’ll visit you again England you beauty 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿❤️, but for now it’s time for a new adventure 🐨

🚫 Health myths we need to stop repeating 🚫

Thyroid ✘ just TSH
TSH is only one marker. Real thyroid health = Free T3, Free T4, antibodies, nutrients, stress, and sometimes inflammatory or autoimmune markers.

Fertility ✘ women’s-only issue
Male s***m quality is half the picture. It even shapes placenta health, crucial for pregnancy and baby, not just conception.

Low mood ✘ just in your head
Metabolism, hormones, inflammation + gut health all shape mood. It’s never just in your head!

Weight gain ✘ willpower
It’s not about “eating less.” Hormones, sleep, exercise + stress all impact weight.

Nausea ✘ just mental
The gut-brain axis means stress + anxiety can trigger real sickness. Sometimes it’s gut infections, parasites, hormones, intolerances or imbalances too.

No energy ✘ laziness
Fatigue often links to thyroid, mitochondria, blood sugar or nutrient issues. It’s not character.

✨ Functional medicine looks deeper, finding the root cause instead of stopping (and judging) at the surface.

❓Which one hits home for you most?

9 months postpartum and I finally feel like my body fits me again.

Hormones are back in their normal pattern, thyroid seems back to normal, I have more energy, all in all I feel good 🥳

This did not happen from counting calories, that strategy has never been very good for me mentally. It makes me look at food as something that has to be controlled and that just creates a downward spiral if I then go one calorie over or I don’t burn off enough. Also my hunger levels fluctuate massively depending on my hormones, some days I eat a lot other days I don’t feel that hungry :)

Instead I tick all the boxes to try and be healthy and then just let my body decide what it needs and wants.

I make sure more often than not I :
Get enough sleep
Stay hydrated
Get sunlight
Exercise ( 2-3 times a week harder than the other days)
See my family and friends

Food wise:
-Have protein, fibre and fats in each meal
-Stay off the pasta and bread - makes me bloat
-Have a healthy treat a day ( chocolate almonds/good chocolate ( Ombar, human etc)
- try and always have a meal that my great grandma would have had ( whole foods!)

These are the 6 ingredients I always use when I’m making our family meals.

✨ All gut-boosting, immune-fighting, organ supporting ingredients

All my children eat these meals from my 8 month old to my 8 year old.

You will always be able to find someone who supports your growth but you will also find someone who tries to keep you small.

Someone who celebrates when you set boundaries and stick to your values but someone else who calls you “no fun” or “too serious” when you won’t compromise yourself.

Someone who respects your choices even when they don’t understand them but someone else who takes your authenticity as a personal attack on their lifestyle.

I’ve learned this the hard way. I used to think friendship meant always saying yes, going along with plans that didn’t align with who I was becoming, staying quiet when people made jokes about my “boring” choices.

The turning point came when I realised some friends only felt comfortable around me when I did what they wanted.

When I started honoring my values, setting boundaries, or choosing what felt right for me, I suddenly found friends that accepted me for me, because I accepted me too.

Here’s the truth: Real friends don’t need you to dim your light to make them comfortable. They don’t pressure you to break your own rules. They don’t guilt you for evolving. They don’t only invite you to things that require you to be a version of yourself you’ve outgrown. The friends who truly see you will either grow alongside you or cheer you on from wherever they are in their own journey. The ones who can’t handle your evolution were never really rooting for the real you anyway.

Don’t look to others to justify who you are. Find your truth and be content with that. Because then people who actually value your friendship will stick around. Your growth is not responsible for other people’s comfort zones.
