Single sided deafness is real – and so are the solutions. Small changes and the right tech can transform daily life.

It doesn’t just mean “half the hearing”. It changes how the world feels.
• Noisy restaurants, meetings and school assemblies can feel like a wall of sound from the wrong side.
• Simple strategies help: choosing where to sit, asking people to be on your “good” side, and reducing background noise where possible.
• For many, technologies like CROS systems or bone conduction devices can make everyday life feel more balanced and less tiring.

You don’t have to simply “put up with it” – with the right mix of strategies and technology, life with one sided hearing can feel far more manageable.

Children rarely say “I can’t hear properly”. They show it in other ways.

- Missed or late diagnosis can affect speech, language, classroom learning and confidence in a big way.
- Newborn screening is a great start – but some types of hearing loss develop or become obvious later.
- If teachers or parents are worried – about listening, attention, or unclear speech – it’s safer to check than to wait and see.

Strong hearing foundations in childhood make everything else easier; early checks are one of the simplest ways to protect a child’s future.

If you’re wondering about your child’s hearing, don’t “wait and see”. A simple check can change their whole school journey.

That ringing or buzzing in your ears has a name: tinnitus. It’s common, but it’s not “just in your head”.

- Tinnitus affects millions and is often linked to hearing loss or noise exposure.
- This phenomenon can sometimes be linked to auditory changes, but it’s important to note that it can also occur with normal hearing.
- It can sound like ringing, hissing, humming, pulsing – and it may vary day to day.
- You can’t “switch it off”, but specialist support and sound therapy can make it far more manageable.
- Tinnitus can affect sleep, concentration, and emotional wellbeing. For some, it’s a mild annoyance; for others, it can be highly disruptive.

If tinnitus is bothering you, don’t suffer in silence – speak to a hearing specialist and explore your options.

Tinnitus isn’t “imagined”. It’s real, common, and treatable. Need tailored advice and calm? We’re here.

A quick “free hearing test” sounds appealing – but it isn’t the same as a full specialist assessment.

- A consultant level assessment looks at your ears, your medical history, your lifestyle and your long term needs, not just a single screening.
- Detailed diagnostics (including different pitches, both ears, and sometimes additional tests) help us understand exactly what is going on.
- The result is a personalised plan: from reassurance and monitoring to carefully selected and fine tuned hearing devices.
If you’ve only ever had a quick screening, you haven’t had the whole picture yet – and your hearing deserves more than a simple “pass” or “fail”.

There’s a big difference between a free check and a full hearing assessment. Your ears are worth the thorough version.

“I’m not deaf, I just can’t hear well.” This is exactly where many people get stuck.

- You can follow one to one chats, but group conversations and restaurants feel exhausting.
- You hear speech, but not clearly, so you end up guessing words and nodding along.
- You tell yourself it’s “just mumbling” or “just getting older” – and put off getting it checked.

There is a whole middle ground between perfect hearing and being “deaf” - and that’s where the right support and hearing technology can make a huge difference to daily life.

Not deaf, but always saying “pardon”? That in between stage is exactly when help makes the biggest difference.

7 signs of hearing loss:

Hearing loss will affect most of us at some point in our lives, however it can be both isolating and distressing, especially when it’s not recognised. Because of this, it is important to understand the potential symptoms of it so that it can be treated early, and you can feel connected again. Here are 7 ways to easily spot possible hearing loss early and have it treated quickly:

👉 Muffled speech – it may not be completely clear what others are saying.
👉 Poor hearing in noise – it may be difficult to filter out background noise.
👉 Volume up – are you turning the TV volume up louder than everyone else?
👉 Pardon? – you may be asking people to repeat themselves often.
👉 Feeling isolated – you may shut yourself away from others because you can’t always understand them.
👉 Phone – phone conversations become harder when you rely more on lipreading.
👉 Tinnitus – there may be an unusual noise in your ears.

If you experience one or more of these symptoms, it may be time to book an appointment with Mills & McKinney. Share your thoughts and comments below!

8 active listening tips:

Strong communication is vital in building and maintaining relationships, but not always easy. Ensuring that everyone feels truly heard is the foundation of creating strong, meaningful connections. However, this can be especially challenging when communication barriers, such as hearing difficulties, come into play. Here are 8 simple yet effective ways to ensure that everyone feels valued and understood, no matter the circumstances:

👉 Eyes forward - Show engagement by maintaining eye contact.

👉 No interruptions - Let the other person speak.

👉 Body signals - As well as speaking clearly, make frequent gestures to make sure you’re understood.

👉 Echo back - briefly restate in your own words what you have just heard to make sure they feel understood.

👉 Open posture - Look genuinely happy to be a part of the conversation, it creates a contagious positive energy that will make you both more receptive.

👉 Quiet mind - Focus only on what is being said to you, nobody likes feeling like they’re a second priority!

👉 Clarify kindly - When something isn’t quite clear, don’t be afraid to ask a few clarificatory questions.

👉 Stay curious - show you’re engaged by asking questions to delve deeper into what you’re discussing.
