Join our free ‘HRT and Older Women’ masterclass to celebrate International Women’s Day with British Menopause Society Accredited Menopause Specialist Dr Katie Barber.

The theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is ‘Inspire Inclusion’ and we’re aiming to do just that with our deep dive into the topic of HRT and older women. We’ll be looking to empower women with the knowledge they need to make an informed decision about HRT and whether it’s right for them - whatever their age. We’ll separate fact from fiction and share evidence based guidance that helps inform individual choice. So if you’re wondering when is too late to start HRT, when you should stop, which options might be best, or even what the alternatives are if HRT isn’t for you, this is the session for you. There’ll also be time for questions.

The days are shorter and the nights are longer, meaning there’s little opportunity to catch some sunlight ☀️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the UK, sunlight is the primary source of vitamin D. Although, fun fact: your body uses UV rays to produce vitamin D in the skin. The sun does NOT transmit down vitamin D.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Since there’s very little sunlight throughout autumn and winter, it’s recommended that UK adults supplement daily with a 10 microgram (400IU) vitamin D supplement during this time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you haven’t got your vitamin D supplement, make it your challenge to buy or order it this week.

Weight gain at menopause is common, with at least 50% of women estimated to gain weight during their menopause transition.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In fact, it’s suggested that women experience on average an increase in body weight of 1.5kg per year of their perimenopause.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Typically, weight gain builds up around the middle, causing a change in body shape that may affect self-esteem. Not only this, but central weight gain is also linked to an increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But what does this mean for you? Are you guaranteed to gain weight at menopause?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Entering the menopause transition does not guarantee you will gain weight. However, changes in body composition at menopause can affect your metabolism, which may decrease your energy expenditure. Often, if you adjust your diet and exercise accordingly, you’ll find that you’re able to manage your weight.

Cholesterol is a type of fat found in the body.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Whilst it's usually associated with being bad for our health, we all need some level of cholesterol to keep us healthy. It's when blood cholesterol levels become high that concerns are raised.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Cholesterol can be categorised into different types, of which two include:
👉 LDL cholesterol, which is our 'bad' cholesterol. This is because if it builds up in blood vessels, it can block blood flow to organs, resulting in major health problems, such as heart disease and heart attacks.
👉 HDL cholesterol, which is our 'good' cholesterol. This is because it helps remove cholesterol from the body, helping to prevent health conditions, such as heart disease.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Diet and lifestyle habits can affect cholesterol levels, and a poor diet and a lack of physical activity can result in raised total and LDL cholesterol levels. This brings an increased risk of heart disease.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
By improving diet and lifestyle habits, high LDL cholesterol levels can be reduced, and HDL cholesterol levels can be optimised - helping to look after your heart health.

An estimated 50% of women gain weight during perimenopause and menopause.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Maybe you already know this, because you're experiencing it yourself.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But why can menopause lead to weight gain? It's a question as old as time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉Your oestrogen levels start decreasing.
👉As oestrogen decreases, it makes it more difficult to hold onto your muscle mass.
👉A reduction in muscle mass means a reduction in your metabolism.
👉 A reduced metabolism means a reduced energy expenditure, making it easier to eat more energy than you use.
👉Leading to weight gain.
⠀⠀
Fortunately, there is something you can do about it.

There are lots of claims that HRT leads to weight gain but the science doesn't support this 🚫
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are countless large, very well respected studies which have not been able to show a link between HRT and weight gain.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some women do report retaining fluid and feeling more bloated with some forms of HRT. However, that is not the same as gaining weight.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We absolutely know that menopause itself and the reduced levels of oestrogen contribute to changing where and how women lay down fat.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We also know that women lose lean body mass in the form of muscle through the normal process of ageing and this contributes to slowing down metabolism.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These two issues are believed to be far more relevant to menopausal weight gain than taking HRT.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
However, let me know your experience below in the comments 👇

You need to stop fad diets.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sure, fad diets can work in the short-term and you lose a few pounds in a couple of weeks, but have you ever been able to maintain that weight loss?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The reality is, for most people they regain the weight they lost, and often even more.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So why don't fad diets work long-term?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Their restrictive nature means you'll likely only be able to follow the diet plan for a few weeks. During this time, you've been told what to eat, how much to eat and when to eat. You don't have to do much thinking.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When you stop the diet, you return to needing to think about what you're eating. However, your fad diet never taught you better lifestyle habits, so you return to your previous habits which leads to weight regain.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, what am I trying to say: You need to stop fad diets and build new and better lifestyle habits.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

If you're fed up of losing weight and regaining it, this post is just for you!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are just 3 tips to help you shift that extra weight for good:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉 You have to ditch diets and quick fixes. As long as you're trying to be restrictive with your diet, you won't see long-term results. Restrictive diets never last long and you'll just return to bad habits and regain the weight you lost. This time around, you need to focus on building lifelong lifestyle habits.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉 Forget calorie and macro counting. Focus on eating sensible portion sizes with a balance of all the right food groups to ensure you meet your nutritional needs so you can thrive.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉It's not just cardio that's important, but strength and restorative exercises too. The right balance of all three will make losing weight that little bit easier.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Did you know that the 12 week Back to Basics Menopause Lifestyle and Weight Management programme focuses on these three elements and more to help you lose weight permanently?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Hundreds of women have taken part in this programme and found success in improving their lifestyle AND losing weight.
