Hamish and Jack Friend (26), along with Arthur and Euan (24), conquered the 3,000-mile journey from the Canary Islands to Antigua in just 32 days.

This grueling adventure, known as one of the world’s toughest rows, had them battling storms and getting slapped by flying fish.

Although they were bested by a Catalan team that completed the journey in 31 days, the brothers' triumph was nothing short of remarkable.

Upon arriving at Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua at 4:20 AM on Saturday, the brothers celebrated their incredible feat by lighting red flares and standing proudly on their vessel.

Two sisters who believed they were fraternal twins discovered they were actually identical after one was diagnosed with leukaemia.

While preparing for a stem cell transplant, doctors realised their DNA was nearly identical, meaning one sister could no longer donate, despite being a perfect match in every other way.

Thanks to an anonymous donor, a transplant was still possible, and their story now highlights just how important stem cell donation is.

It’s also a reminder of how complex twin biology can be, even twins themselves don’t always know their true type.

There’s a lot more to research than what you see on the day of a study visit 😀

Behind every project is a team working on:
✔️ organising appointments
✔️ preparing samples
✔️ managing data
✔️ supporting participants
✔️ turning results into real studies

It’s a big team effort, and every role helps make research possible.

Science is built by people, for people 😁

We recently spoke with science fiction author Stephen Oram about his latest short story My Vagus Proxy, which explores the fascinating connections between gut health, mental wellbeing, and our relationship with the environment.

The story, developed in collaboration with TwinsUK researcher Claire Steves, draws on real scientific ideas to imagine a hopeful near future, one where insights from research could positively shape both individual health and society.

Stephen shared how conversations with Claire and time spent with TwinsUK researchers and participants helped ground the story in real-world science. Rather than taking a dystopian approach, My Vagus Proxy focuses on what he calls a “thrutopic” future, exploring how we might move towards better outcomes through science, collaboration, and innovation.
